in some places , they seek youngsters...i thought there was no age discrimination! most places look to hire teenagers, and work with their school schedules, and cuz they don't have to pay them as much as an adult requires for bills and family ! when i am available all days to work , with only one child, and a fulltime grandma to baby sit! ugh, i may not be young however i am well experienced in my retail work..Just as hard of a worker , nice to people, fast learner .. WHATEVER!

There is something wrong when age becomes the scorecard. As we grow older we have so much to offer. It is shame that the owners and managers who hire these young people, don't understand how much better their organizations would do and how much good it would do for the young people.

i HAVE GONE TO TOO MANY INTERVIEW SAYING THEY NEED HELP. WHEN YOU GET THERE AND TAKE A LOOK AT YOU AND SMILE AND GIVE YOU AN APPLICATION. YOU FILL IT OUT AND THEY SAY WE WILL CALL YOU WHEN SOMETHING COME OPEN. SOMEONE COME IN YOUNGER THEN YOU,FILLS OUT THE SAME APPLICATION THEY TELL THEM TO HAVE A SEAT AND THE HIRING WILL SEE YOU IN A MINUTE. I WENT IN THIS PLACE JUST THE OTHER DAY AND THE MAN WHO OWN THE BUSINESS SAID HE NEED HELP RIGHT AWAY. I TOLD HIM I WAS READY TO GO WORK NOW . HE LOOKED AT ME AND TOLD ME TO MY FACE I DON'T HIRE OLD PEOPLE. (67)

Yes I believe age discrimination is a serious problem.. I have been searching for over a year and I know once they see how old I am they immediately decide that they are no longer looking for anyone for the position but within the same position is posted again. So sad.

I am 49 and lost my job last summer. I've been diligently looking for 12 months. You're right, I've been passed over for younger candidates several times. There is definitely age discrimination out in the work force. I am more experienced and capable than these children out of college. I'm just getting frustrated! I'm thinking about filing an age discrimination suit against a company. Maybe if we stand together, we can make a change, I'm not going to settle for a house keeping job. I have a college degree and 15 years of sales experience

We can all say what shouldn't be with this or that however it doesn't and hasn't created change so far . let's reflect on what we CAN change! Care.com to work with families. Try applying to hotels/ motels as a housekeeper. Also try to volunteer at a food pantry ( if u can) and it will get your foot in the door to possibly be hired or at least tap into resource services if available. Im praying for u!

I agree with you completely! I have never in my life had such a hard time finding a job or even getting an interview with even grocery stores, gas stations etc. Age and having taken time off of work to go to college and try to get a degree and being a stay at home parent, no one wants to hire you if your job history isn't solid and perfect! There are people willing, wanting and needing to work that may not have had to in the past years! But everyone's circumstances change not only yearly but daily!!!

There shouldn't be age discrimination, but in a way there is. A lot of places want younger, less experienced workers so they can pay them less, like you said. I think you just have to keep applying for lots of things until you find some that will work with you.
