Sheetmetal Journeyman at Central States Roofing

SOOO BUMMED!!!!

I have put so much time in effort into finding a job. I'm a sheet metal worker in construction. I was in the union, attended classes. Worked out in the field in waist high snow, only to get looked at like I can't do this. I work harder then some men, and I'm feeling like everything I accomplished was in vain. I just want everyone to know, never judge a book by it's cover. I pack a punch!!

Are a licensed/certified sheet metalsmith? Did your union training lead to valid certification/licensing usable in all 50 states? It's tough out there. While you worked in waist-high snow, the job market is also waist-high in "snow-drifts" of unemployed personnel. Your industry is also dogged by the illegal use of uncertified/unlicensed construction engineers and that makes it worse. Is sheet metal your only specialty. Nowadays, it's all multi-tasking - from carpentry to electricity to plumbing. Guess what, you have to be certified and licensed in all those trade industries right now. Are you living in an area where you have ongoing construction or do you live in the "rust belt"? Keep plugging away - look at expanding your construction skills. Remember, your competition isn't Home Depot or Lowe's but the day laborers hanging out at the back of those enterprises.

Go Amy. There are too many candidates for the number of jobs. I don't think they give a shit how good you are. When it comes to male bosses, it might come down to "it's not who you know, it's who you blow." Being a capable woman doesn't necessarily mean anything.
