Sales Manager at Allegra Print Mail

RL

I am 61 years old and I have been looking for a job for about a year and 3 months. It seems as though my experience in sales, marketing and customer service is of no value to anyone. I have located a number of jobs on the internet, but I never receive a response. I have started wondering if this is the way to find a job. I have read that cold calling doesn't work because you come across as desperate or you make the receptionist uncomfortable. I am too young to retire, but I do not know where to go from here. I am registered with 6 agencies locally. I have been told that it is not my age, but I do not believe that. Any ideas??

Currently looking for work

It IS your age Robert! I don't know where you live Robert but here in Las Vegas, age discrimination is HUGE!!!!!!!!!!!! In 95% of the applications I've applied to online, they either ask for the year you graduated H.S., or your date of birth or BOTH and there is NO WAY of getting around it in the application process!!! That is FUCKED-UP!!!!!

You are absolutely right and the reason for this is because workers need 21st century skills.

I sent a letter to gov. Brown in late Dec telling him of the problem.

Please email me thecollegeadmissionsconsultant@gmail.com

I will try to help you. Thanks Patty

I wished I could help you ! I'm 46 and this is the first time I've been unemployed. I have a degree and 28 years of manufacturing experience. My job responsibilities have been in engineering, R&D, supervisory and management positions in automotive, heavy duty agricultural, aerospace, and lighting. I'm having the hardest time finding a job. I do only have my associates degree. I should have kept going but I Was raising a family and managing a factory. Now the fresh folks directly out of school are getting the positions I desire. I'm at crossroads myself and unsure. Respectfully, William

Hi RL! I think you need to look on the inside and find your confidence and you will find it if you write a mission statement or a warrior mantra like : I am a confident, fun, gift to anyone who needs sales, marketing and any kind of customer service. Your PMA is a magnet for opportunities and I think you are so focused on the lack and limitations you are not using your talents to step into your gifts. Your outer age is irrelevant. Art Linkletter was 92 years young on stage saying there is always a new hill to climb and the day we stop learning is the day we start dying. I have to ask what are you learning and how are you growing as a human being? You need to realize that the fruits of your labor in getting a job is related to your roots. Right now you can throw a business card together offering sales, marketing and customer service or be a rep and start meeting people. Work sections of a town. We get work by relationships. You can sit in on breakfast gathering located in the paper or toast Masters or join a church or square dancing or helping the humane society or hanging out at a different coffee shop every morning and ease drop on conversations that you can offer help to or call people. I called B&B's telling them about my workroom. fabric and talents and I was told how delighted they were to hear from me - a local yokel. Be a blessed happy local yokel and share your gifts. There are TONS of youtube videos on selling. Here is an amazing one. Follow the rabbit hole and make a mission to listen to one a day to get your head FILLED with PMA!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVKhuZ8Qsyg

Need work

Um I was reading an article today about this. How companies are discriminating against older people. Wanting the 20s and 30s crowd. AARP says they can help with this. try contacting them and see if they can help. I feel ya as I am 50 and am having trouble myself finding work that I have been doing for years myself

Robert, it is definitely tough out there today it took my sister 17months to find her current job, she actually landed the job working as a temp for several assignments in the education environment and when a permanent position opened up she applied and was offered the job. You may have to consider temporary work, if the company likes you they will usually offer you a permanent position. Usually customer service seems to be a good place to get your foot in the door to many of the top companies so maybe go this route through the temporary agencies. Also if you don't have one already set up a profile on LinkedIn, this is a good way to network and apply directly to job openings. Good Luck.

Do you have a degree? That's huge these days. I sure with a sales background and your years experience the skill set you have will get you work at Auto dealerships, carpet install companies, home security companies. Yes age and appearance will play a huge part in getting that offer your looking for. Good luck.

Applying to jobs on the internet is THE way of finding new employment. Follow the directions the site gives you. I don't think it's age necessarily, but think about if you have a problem & have to call customer service you want to hear someone on the other end of the phone who sounds positive & happy(and helpful). If that's not how you're interviewing, change it, that's why you might not be getting offers.

Sorry to say but almost all employers hold our age against us even the Government does by putting age restrictions on jobs we can apply for. You might want to try retail establishments they like our age. I was assured by local agencies that they would get me a job fast. Only one interview in 3 months. Was told by agency that an offer was going to be made. Only to be told by HR manager that with upcoming vacancies they chose another candidate.
