Reference Check

Can I use a former college professor as a professional reference for a job application? Most of my previous employers are either out of business or management has moved on. I need three references but so far I only have 2. Any ideas?

Interesting question! I think if you did work for this professor as part of a project or during a time that was separate from the class, then maybe "yes." The best way to handle this, though, is to ask the employer. Explain why you want to use the professor and why you think he/she can speak to your abilities as a working professional.
Let us know what the employer says, ok? (I'm so curious!!) Thanks Annette!

Hi Annette,

If you had a good relationship with the Professor, that can be very beneficial as a reference. I would just try to make sure they are getting the proper references, as a Professor may be seen as more of a personal reference unless you did work for them.
