Quality Supervisor at Mtz Engineering Company

Tired of looking for a job and needing to be hired now or I lose everything.

I just went past 10 months of repeated job interviews and constant looking. I am so frustrated that I can't get anything in my area of experience. I'm 57, a disable veteran, and I have almost 21 years of quality control experience starting as an inspector to manager, working in manufacturing and NDT settings. My biggest weakness is only having an Associate's degree.

The last 3 years have been extremely rough with having one company closing while I was working for them and then all I could find is a temp position. So I've only been working for 6 months out of the last 35 months. With 11 people in the house including most of my grand-kids and helping out some of my own children keep a roof over there heads. Most of the kids work but with my wife having been let go and my struggles I've wiped out my savings and emptied my 401K's to make ends meet.

I'm not trying to sound like this is a "Whine". But I'm out of ideas of how to keep my house and even to find a job. I've used government help with payments but that has expired. I'm sending out resumes between Chicago, IL and South Bend, IN. But I am frustrated when I never hear back or feel like I'm being pushed aside due to my age.

I feel at times like giving up and if I was by myself I almost think I would. I'm willing to relocate but have lost all ability to support myself for two weeks or more till I get my first paid.

I could continue but I won't. My biggest worry right now is that in possibly 3-6 months i could be putting my grand-kids out on the street.

Thank you for your service to our country. I work for a company named PennyMac and we have been named one of the most "Veteran Friendly Employers" for the past few years. We make every effort to hire veterans. Please look on our website and see if there any any area that interests you.

Also, there are mortgage modification programs that can help you keep your house. Please call your mortgage lender and ask about these. And another sidenote......I am not sure why you have 11 people living in your house. But maybe it is time for some of the people living in your home to contribute financially or find another place to live. This would take a great deal of pressure off of you. God bless you and good luck!

Senior Technical Writer Project Manager at Ttp

I know how this sounds, but you might try and get into "another field". Take your experience and convert it into something else. Example: I am an engineer. Try finding engineering jobs - especially for females. Not available. So I have converted that experience into something else - technical writing, article writing, etc. Possibly part-time teaching... Yes - I agree - Age issues are out there and might be out there for a long time. Gender too. Try and convert yourself into someone else. I also want to thank you for your service.

Charles, I'm so sorry to hear about your troubles. If you are terribly desperate right now, I'd recommend you find anything you have lying around that can be sold for cash. This might keep you going until you find work. Contact churches and community centers near you and see if they have any recommendations or anyone who can help you. Keep up the search for both full-time and temp work (you never know what temp work might lead to), and maybe see if there are any networking or job search groups near you. You're not the only one going through this, and there is definitely a more difficult time looking for work when you're older. I found this article of tips for older jobseekers: https://www.topresume.com/career-advice/tips-for-older-job-seekers, perhaps it can help you a little?

I really wish I had more advice, but please don't give up. You are incredibly strong!
