Can you tell if someone is a bad boss from the interview?

I got call back for a job I interviewed for last week but I got a bad vibe from the manager during the interview. I don’t know if he was just having a bad day or if that’s his normal attitude but I’m hesitant to take the job now.

I would request another interview. Employer's ask for several interviews all the time. If he ask why you would like another interview, simply tell him you want to tour the company, meet your immediate supervisor and you have more questions about the position. Make a list first. Explain to him that you want to make sure you are a right fit for them. Surely, if he's a good person he'll understand that.

Yes you can tell...My last position I wished I had taken my own advice. The job started getting me down..I stayed with the company.Watched them lie to me...manipulate..and pay me poorly. When I was tired of it I was half way to work and something told me too turn around and go home. I went the next day and I knew they were going to let me go...I told them it wasn't working for me neither. The very last call I made in that office was from a client telling me he would never use our company again because the owner was very nasty to him...That's how most of our clients reacted to us. Listen to your gut instinct. If it's not right...just pass on it..till you find a tolerable fit.

Sarah, Recently I interviewed with a hiring manager who was unfriendly and gave the impression I was wasting her time . This was before we even spoke! My feeling is that if someone is going to treat you with disrespect in an interview, having just met you you, the chances are they will disrespect you as an employee. As job seekers we need to stop overlooking bad behavior because we need a job. In many cases the recruitment process is severely broken, and as long as candidates accept this, it will not change.

It's important to go with your gut instincts. I agree with the comments that it's difficult to know enough from the first meeting, so consider an alternative. If you have only met the person once consider asking for a follow up 20 minute interview because you thought of something else you would like to ask in a sit down manner. If it's not granted that's telling and enough said. If it is granted then think of a couple great follow up questions and have them respond to something like the following: Tell me about the type of boss you are and the conditions that you enjoy working under. This should give your intuition plenty of knowledge to make the right decision. After all it's great to be working but not so wonderful to explain a bad job on the next interview.

Emotional intelligence will speak volumes about the manager. Management should have learned how to control them self. If the manager was having a bad day, shame on them for bring that into the interview process. I would definitely reconsider.
