Should I provide my SS# on online applications?

I wanted to apply for a position in Target, and they are asking for a lot of personal info like SS#, Mothers maiden name etc. Is it safe to provide such info online? Almost all other companies that I have applied for at the most they ask the last 4 digits of the SS#

I do not believe this is required information on a job application. If not required, do not put. Eventually, you will need to share some personal information. My daughter just filled out a Target application, and this information was not required. Good Luck! I wish you well.

Do not post that. Maybe the last 4, but never your entire number.

Dear Ms. Stromp;

Absolutely not! If digital, take the 555-555-5550 route, and f a paper application, simply write; "Willing, and happy, providing this sensitive information directly (upon being asked by a human during an interview) and/or as requested during an appointment/interview. This holds true for other highly private information.

Be polite, but this rule applies to All jobs, not only Target. Besides, if Target gives you any problems, politely inquire as to what the final tally is, a year after releasing the lower tally, from their hack several years ago, and that you do not fancy handing over personal information to be hacked! Okay, the last bit is sarcasm, but it is based on the truth. Tell them you are not comfortable, at this stage in the process, handing over your SSN, amongst the other highly personal and professional information provided on your application. And no, it is not safe providing your SSN online, unless it's a proven and trusted (and encrypted-as-Hell) site, such as your financial institution (sans Wells Fargo), Government sites, et al, . and always make sure the address is 100% accurate, has a Green Lock, and "https://" first thing and in front of the 'www.whatever.com'. Hope this helps, and best of luck! I'm sure you'll nail it!!!

Cheers,

PVH

Irene, It does seam they should not ask for so much personal information before we are even offered a job, however, if we do not offer this, we aren't considered for employment with them at all! Most all major employers Will ask for this!
