Having trouble...
I currently work in the food industry as a bartender/server and have been wanting to get out and begin employment with a company that I can grow with and gain experience with in a different field. My goal this spring was to land a sales job, which the search was going good. I landed a job in a field that I knew I was going to grow and flourish in and I put in my two weeks with my current restaurant job.
The problem I am faced with is that I have a criminal history and it bans me from being employed with most companies. Low and behold I receive a call this morning from the company that was going to hire me and they cannot due to pressure from corporate and me not being able to coexist with their insurance. Most people look at me and say "Well tough luck." or "You should have thought about that before you broke the law." I cannot take back what happened to me. What happened will be erased from my record in due time. People WANT to hire me, but they cannot because of the legal side. I do not want to be stuck working somewhere that I'll have no passion to be my best all the time.
Is there anybody I can talk to or consult with that can coach me through this? It's throwing me through a loop. All I want at this point is to get started.
Hello Alex, Welcome to Jobcase! You raise a good question on an issue affecting lots of members who visit this community. The truth is we all make mistakes and merit a second chance after a season of consistent recovery and recuperation. The employment community around this issue is outdated but efforts are being made via new Second Chance and Ban the Box Laws already being incorporated by some states. Other employer incentives like the Work Tax Credit are encouraging employers to offer second chance opportunities to targeted jobseekers who have consistently faced significant barriers to employment.
