I have been working as a licensed massage therapist for two months at a spa that has massage therapy but is primarily for estheticians When I was hired they pressured me to be full time when I only wanted part time After working there for two weeks I realized I had to have full time hours available just to increase the probability of getting enough appointments When hired I was told they could get me as many appointments as I wanted That was a misrepresentation not malicious but nevertheless not true and she knew it was not true when she said it I am not getting enough work in spite of 5 days FT availability The rate per hour is too low by about $5 an hr for therapists for the market Tips are not great either I average 8 to 9 massage appointments a week and that is starvation wages I am so tired of being lied to in interviews The owner had a tragedy in her family a year ago and told me she just is not in a place to do much about being involved in her business operations anymore All the leadership is on the side of the estheticians sticking together to keep the doors open and get bookings for their services I like them but I am hurting financially trying to work there Plus they have me illegally classified as an independent contractor which I know by law is not true and not legal So I feel I am at an impasse I am a good therapist with 10 years experience get great reviews It isn't just a matter of time like being there longer It is a matter of marketing and leadership They are a membership spa and after ten years in business only have 300 members The spa industry is awful treat you terribly like you are a servant not a professional and I am burned out on the job as a therapist too and need to get into another line of work
