Wrongful termination?

I was terminated from my job, the reason that was given to me? For borrowing a packing tape gun from work, considered company property, and not notifying my manager, although I did notify 1-2 other employees. During the year of 2018 I had received many write ups for unnecessary situations, I had even reported my manager to the business abuse hotline for a hostile work environment. My manager had expressed comments about wanting to “fire” me and another associate. Was I retaliated against? Was the company viewing me as a liability for reporting unfair treatment? I’m just trying to understand what happened because I feel I was targeted and eventually weaved out of my company.

Not trying to play the Devil's advocate here but if your company has a zero tolerance policy on theft they are in the right for what they did. If the policy is information a manager to remove company policy then that is what needs to be done. The moment the items leave the properly it is theft, even if you bring it back the next day. Telling other employees does not always meet the criteria of company policy. It does not matter how small the items are, it's about procedure. If you manager did want to fire you, then you gave them a valid reason to do so. The forms you sign when you first start working usually have procedures like this spelled out. Unfortunately no one seems to read the small print and even I am guilty not reading those.

Hi Unknown Unknown - it definitely seems like they fired you over a small reason... I would contact your local labor board and see what they have to say. If you boss said he wanted to fire you before and you have proof, you can tell them that and it may have been an unlawful fire.. Check with them, they will be able to tell you for sure.

Best of luck in the meantime, though. You definitely want to get back out there! Besides, if your boss fostered a hostile work environment you wouldn't want to stay there. Have you tried using the job search tool here on Jobcase?

Just follow these steps!

1. Click on Jobs & Companies at the top of the page, or head over [here] (http://www.jobcase.com/jobs/search)

2. Enter a job into the search field where it says Job Title, Keywords, or Company.

3. Add in your location by filling in your City and State OR zip code. Then click the magnifying glass to search.

4. Once the list is up, click on “View Job" of any you are interested in and then apply.

Wishing you the best of luck with your job search!
