Store Manager at Redners Markets

Age discrimination?

I am turning 60 this year. I have been a successful retail store manager for nearly 40 years. I lost my last job due to my store closing as so many are today. So I had to go on the hunt for a job. A few weeks a go I got a call for an interview for a company I really would like to work for. I had a first interview and it wnet really well and was told there was apossibility of getting a call for a second interview. 2 hours later, I did get a call for a second interview. I went to that interview and it was going really well until towards the end of the interview. I was asked a couple of age related questions. One asking how I would fit in with a younger work force, they recruit a lot of recent college grads and how I thought it would work for me working for a younger manager during my training. I thought my answers were good and to the point. Now I haven't heard anything for over a week. As a hiring manager myself, I always thought it was against the law to ask age related questions. Is this age discrimination, I am fully qualified for the job. If it is what recourse do I have if not hired?

Yes I share your plight. I am turning 65 this April . I would focus on challenging the interviewer on the business acumen you bring with your experience. Use examples of how your experience can overcome obstacles with savvy customers which most rookies or midexperienced salesmen overlook . The numbers game is applicable in your case because the ideal position is no longer a choice. Until this labor suoply market starts drying up with the new immigration policies, we the elderly will be in a disadvantage. My recommendation is to signup for a job that you find today whether it has its caveats and keep applying for alternative jobs to achieve your goal. Best of luck Ralph

I would move on man. Is it against the law to discriminate based on your age? Yeah. Does it still happen? Definitely. Find a place that appreciates you and won't focus on your age, but what you can bring to the table instead. I am sure you did a good job on your interview, but it really just depends if they want you or not. In this case doesn't seem like they did, but that doesn't mean someone else won't. Keep at it.
