A receptionist job, helps you get to know the people within a company and the way the company operates. A receptionist job can be a stepping stone within a company. As a receptionist previously, the accountant would give me some of her spill over work, I ended up moving to the accounting department as an accounting assistant, since I don't have an accounting degree.

Helps the company overall and in turn you can learn more about the company and how to be of service to clients and other employees. It is a great stepping- stone to start. I love interacting with people which I have does for the last 13 years.

Yes it depends, some companies bring a new person in as a receptionist, and then move you up into other positions.

This really depends what type of receptionist you are and where you would like to be. An example would be I started out as a medical receptionist. I felt out how I liked the medical field. I then moved to Medical Assistant and now that I only have 1 minor left at hime I'm contemplating nursing school. So I've worked almost every aspect of the medical office in several specialties over the past 20+ years. The company I'm in now you have to keep moving up in positions and eventually you can end up in the business office in management if you wish. Also the more parts of the office you can work, the better hiring power and ability to ask for more money. This job I'm at now I also have become a lab tech under the Medical Assistant title. Another asset should I move on from there.

I agree with Tina's answer. It depends. When I was a receptionist, my company got to know my background and my skills, and I eventually moved into an HR Admin role, and kept moving up. So, it can help start your career - it's all in your motivation, passion, work ability, and skills you learn/want to learn.

Depends on what kind of receptionist you are and how good you are . You could became an executive secretary for an attorney’s office if you have skills or with some classes, maybe work for a doctors office, a company. There’s a lot out there that may fall under a different name but your doing the same work, pay attention to the details.
