Not a Lifer

What's the average length of time one should spend at a job before moving on? I read that job hopping is the new norm for millennials and employers lean towards candidates that are risk takers and advancement seekers. I’m still early into my career so I’m not ready to move on just yet but I would definitely like to avoid becoming complacent and risk getting a new job when the time comes.

I agree with the other comments, stay as long as you are learning and enjoying it. As for the millennials and the job hopping, from my perspective, it doesn't necessarily mean they are risk takers at all. We look for candidates that have longevity in their roles, we want someone to grow with us. When we see a jumper, we think about the time, energy and money needed to invest in training this person and if it will be a waste when they decide to jump from us.

Hard to say but I don't think moving from job to job is necessary as long as you're achieving your career goals where you are. That's not the best plan for everybody. I don't think you need to plan to leave if you don't have to.

I think the max these days is 5 years but the focus is on building new skills within that time.

I don't think it matters or even makes sense to leave as long as you can continue to grow within the same company.
