Religion Discremination

I have recently been looking for a part time job. I am a LPN. I have epilepsy and can not work a full 80 hrs . I am Muslim, I have over 25 years experience. I have been called in on several jobs for interviews all of which went well even the employers have stated they we're impressed. I have not been called back by not even 1 of them. I believe it has something to do with my Hijab. What are your thoughts?

Sometimes, we dress to make others around us feel at ease. Try interviewing without the Hijab and see if your results change. Having work may be more helpful than wearing a particular garment. I don't enjoy wearing suits but on interviews, I will dress for the occasion. Also, if you have been a nurse for so long, it may be they are looking for younger candidates to train to replace themselves, when they retire.

You are probably right, it's unfortunate but we live in a world of total prejudice.. People don't get it, you bring Muslim does not mean that you are a terrorist.. Bring Muslim is a religion just like any other. Isis is a terrorist group of people which have non Muslims as well.. Keep your head up, stay strong, someone out there will accept you for who you are and appreciate the work you do.

Kim, upon viewing your profile picture, I think you want to smile, but might be holding it back. This is America, and we expect the females to outshine the males all day long. As they usually do! However, it is also critical to discuss 'the employers' concerns as to Islam, and your faith. And in doing so, you will have a clearer idea of the different kinds of biases that will exist there.

I was living in North Park (San Diego) for the last 4 years finishing my degree, and I found that 60% of my neighborhood was Muslim. As a matter of fact, I was the only white person, living above a salon run by men (one Hispanic mix, and the others all converts to Islam). Normally some would say African/American, but it is alright to just say Black now, as it is impossible to tell where any of us truly originate, as every country has every ethnicity within their borders...and one day soon, within their blood lines. Two other businesses, a used car lot and across the street, a garage and body shop were filled with Spanish speaking persons. While across the street, the corner market and the pizza parlor laborer's were from Iran.

I wish I wasn't biased, but I find the caste system to be an affront to my moral constitution, and the deaths of thousands of children each year disquieting in these supposedly modern times. Yet we continue to support India with our industries and commerce. Pakistan is my greatest fear, as the bulk of the country is Islam (95%), and pretty evenly split between Sunni and Shia. I'm not saying that it will end badly for them, as everywhere we look, religious nationalism is on the rise. And that is probably not good for any of us. But until we either blow ourselves up, or get hit by an asteroid, we are going to share this planet with everyone who lives here. So wear your Hijab proudly, and next time, instead of asking us for our thoughts, ask the interviewer for their's. Best to you. Respectfully, Philip M Brockman

yes, it does in part, have to do,with your appearance. Perhaps googling what you seek? In peace and honesty, I don't get why you don't understand? For me, it speaks,to outdated culture and anti feminism Perhaps within a community who understand and better accepts. Wal-Mart is more open FYI

First off you have no clue what I've faced for discrimination. and you can't be in America claiming discrimination if you don't expect an opinion in return if you can't handle it don't cry here when you ask for any thoughts. Jesus is Lord!

It's possible, but I think it has more to do with your epilepsy (I'm pretty sure they're not allowed to discriminate on that basis either, but if they have similarly qualified alternatives it's almost a given they will choose the one who's the least likely to miss work). I've gone on many interviews where I didn't hear back from them, even though I was told I would receive a call (with the implication that the job was mine), it's, sadly, part of the job searching process. Don't give up hope, don't wait for these jobs to reply to you, keep applying on a daily basis. If all else fails, you could consider volunteering at one of these places so you can show them that you are a reliable worker, I know quite a number of people who were hired after spending a few months as a volunteer (of course, if you don't have the financial means to do so, that's not going to work). Alternatively, you could look for a "bad" job, like McDonald's to tide you over while you apply for the jobs that you actually want (if you can handle the nepotism, can stand the way some branches (mis)treat their employees, and are willing to invest quite a bit of time (some 20 to 25 years in most cases), places like McDonald's can actually be really good opportunities). I'm sure things will work out for you in the end, keep your chin up and stay on top of it.

The unfortunate truth is our illnesses don't change the need for staff, and epilepsy can be a very devasattinh condition .Depending on the severity you might want to go private nursing. It often pays more, and is a lesser work load, being one on one ,and is often more flexable for your schedule..But of course tbats only if you type of epilepsy isn't too zevere and is able to be kept under control.I understand that stress also triggers it,so it may help in that reguarde as well.

Hi Kim, As a Muslim, have faith and trust in your Allah, only when Allah says this is the chosen opportunity, will start working and get employed. Do not despair because of preconceived negative assumptions. Have patience and keep trying, you will get the best job God willing.
