Be true to self!
I am 16 years old and I love helping people. For the past 3 years I have volunteered in multiple community service programs. I was wondering how can I use my experience doing community service to get a job? What kind of job can I get that is not retail or fast food?

Hi, Olivia. As others have suggested here, your volunteer experience can be used on your resume and the contacts you made may provide you with good references and connections to potential jobs. Also, your volunteer experience has given you skills. You can talk about those experiences and skills in interviews. The experience can help you learn what kinds of work or career you want. If you have some ideas about what you would like to do long-term, it would be great if you could apply in the places that do that type of work to test it out and get relevant experience. For instance, if you want to be a lawyer or law clerk, see if you can get a part-time job in a law office. It would probably just be doing things like making copies or setting up a room for a meeting with clients. But you would get to see what the environment is like and learn more about what the job is like. Go to (or write) places where they do the kind of work you'd like to learn more about and tell them of your interest, then ask if there's anything you could do there or if they know someone else who might have a place for you (enclose or bring a resume listing your volunteer roles and the skills you learned).
Other entry level jobs for teens, besides retail or fast food, include
- baby sitting
- dog walking or vacation sitting
- supermarkets
- movie theaters
- seasonal positions like lifeguarding or selling in pop-up stores like the Christmas and Halloween stores
- lawn care
- help at other teen hangouts like skating rinks
- stocking at other stores, like dollar stores, big-box stores
- counter work at ice cream or cupcake stores
Ask trusted teachers, parents, parent's friends, friend's parents, and the adults where you volunteered for ideas and help. Best wishes!

Olivia 3years of community service experience would first depend on what type/area of community service did you volunteer for. There is domestic violence(crisis advocate), Elderly care, Child care..You get my point? Based on the experience i would google community service organizations in that field, in you city or surrounding area and start networking to see if there are any open positions..Good Luck keep up the good work! It will pay off

I think, this is just joking with!

Check with goodwill.org they helped me find a job based on my talents and qualifications. They are a excellent place to start.

I agree definatly use your volunteer and community service experience in your resume. As well you might continue to network with the people you meet there and possible job openings through your volunteer locations considering you have already made a good impression there. The boys and girls clubs, habitat for humanity as well YMCA would be an awesome start not to mention looks strong later on your resume.

A EXCELLENT OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU IS "YOUR PUBLIC LIBRARY", BUT SINCE IS THE SUMMER TIME THEY ALL ARE STAFFED. YOU CAN TRY IT UP, THO!!

Olivia, when I was 16, I worked at the YMCA, as a lifeguard. The pay was good, and I got to work with young kids and adults, which made it awesome. There are many positions open at the YMCA, if being a lifeguard is not for you.

Try day camps or your local parks and recreation department. Maybe your local school needs a clerical.
Well you could be a teacher or a doctor or musician. Sky's the limit! Even better start your own company like I did. That would create more jobs and help the economy. Have you finished high school? College can be overrated but definitely finish high school. Geez your so young!
