Accounts Representative at Sac Finance

Eligibility and billing specialist

I just got a new job and I'm in training. I love what I will be doing but some of my new co-workers are scaring me when they tell me about all the over time they have been putting in. (They were short people in this department but now have me and 5 other people) When hired, I was asked, do you mind over time? I said sometimes....but they are telling me 15+ hours a week. I am concerned. I can't do that much over time each week. I took the job because I was told it was Monday to Friday with a flex schedule (start work from 7-10 and work your 8 hours) How does everyone else feel about this? Whats your experience with OT? Also....this department will be put on a "matrix pay schedule" meaning you get paid by what you produce. I was not told about this either. Comments please? any one with experience in this area? Thanks

Ups at Ups

I would first look at the policy in the HR department and I would review with them what does it mean to work overtime in your area of work also you need to find out if you really want to stay in this job or you want to look somewhere else you may want to start looking at temporary agencies and at least get some opportunities elsewhere you can also look at nonprofit agencies they really take care of their employees

Claim Analyst at Bottom Line Systems

Be very careful listening to coworkers who have been in a job along time. Although they may be great people it has been my experience that those who are the loudest about the negativity of a company are those who do not follow the rules, have issues with write ups and are generally unhappy people. The ones who are giving you the negative information are they saying the OT is mandatory? Is it voluntary? If the group was down by 5 people that could very well be the reason for so much overtime. 5*40=200 hours that needed to be made up. Ask your trainers or HR about the OT portion…be polite and make it sound like no big deal but that is where you will find out if the OT is a big deal.

The matrix pay can be a very good thing. It sounds like the type of work that First source does. So in the matrix with First source you get paid per claim and sometimes the matrix can be very lucrative when you are doing 150-200 claims per day depending on the amount they pay per claim. It may or may not be something that you find good depending what you were making in your last job but I know that the matrix can be a great thing if you are a hard worker.

The best advice that I can give you is to remain positive...do not focus on another person's age focus on your capabilities..... they wouldn't have hired you if they didn't feel that you could do the job.... also looking at over time.....it can either be a plus or a minus if you can start at 7 in the morning there is still a possibility that during the week you can accomplish working 15 hours of overtime....For example, if you worked at 7 and you left at 6 or 7 that would be an additional 3 hours per day if you're working 8 hours..... especially if you're given an hour of lunch..... so again it is not as tumultuous as it may appear....if you find it helpful try and go forward with your concerns to HR in a positive mindset. I - like you, have worked for almost 30 years doing different types of positions as a social services employee, manager, Sales and on and on.....I am constantly being told now that I have way too much experience under my belt....Unfortunately, I was working to the point where I was not able to accomplish getting my degree because I was too busy trying to keep myself and my family together financially...... so the only thing that I can stress to you is to find the benefits of it out as much as you possibly can....think about not only your potential to advance but also what your retirement goals are that you'd like to accomplish...... if you feel that after a while its too much for you....then keep searching just like you did with this one......it didn't hurt for you to still look for something in the meantime...... but again as others have told you be positive about the fact that you do have a job....which is very difficult to land lately....Good luck to you and I hope I've been slightly helpful

Hum....I think I'd check with management about ur concerns. Just don't make it sound like a big deal to u (even if it is) bring it up casually. Your fears may not b warranted at all. In other words, don't worry about what may or may not b true UNTIL u find out yourself. Good thing is..... U have a job now...& if u need to get another later on, it'll b a whole lot easier to do when ur already employed.

Oh my it all depends on your situation preferable I don't do overtime I know my situation and me as a person. I also have a life outside the job force my family need my presence also. Just get ur training out the way don't listen too everything be wise in all things follow what's in your heart if it's not for u go to Human Resource and make it known and move on u are better than that think positive u will come out a winner every time! Production sometimes is not good especially if u never work for a company that pay you according too what you produce. Don't settle go out there and get ur job that best suited for your lifestyle and you!
