Social media

This topic was probably brought up before, but i wonder if HR staff researches a person on Facebook/Twitter/Instagram/etc., after someone applies. If you post things that might be controversial to some, maybe it's a good idea to temporarily delete your accounts until you get settled into a new job.

You don't have to delete the accounts per se, but changing the name on it will prevent them from finding you in a search. Additionally, change the privacy settings on your accounts so that only friends can see your posts.

Keep in mind, employers definitely do look at your social media accounts and any websites you may have.

Prime example:

At the end of 2016, I found myself without a job. I was applying and putting in countless hours scouring job sites and interviewing.

I landed an interview with a rather prestigious company. My fourth interview found me speaking directly to the CEO. It was going well, then I hear him say, "I just found your website. I see you are a writer. I just bought your book, (insert title here)."

I sort of deflated, because that book is a rather offensive horror comedy novel. It wasn't meant to be read by a potential employer. Needless to say, I never got a call back or anything. So either the book killed him or offended him to the point that he decided I was persona non grata.

So, lock down those social media accounts, and consider taking down any personal websites until after you are hired.
