Delivery Driver

Which company to choose

All my life I've wanted to be a semi truck driver, but the truth is I don't know how to drive a manual transmission and I don't want to drive the new automatic transmission trucks (cuz to me that's just not a semi but an oversized pickup truck).

But as life goes on I'm now a single mother of 2 young kid's and just want to give them both the life they deserve.

Yes I'm still wanting to drive but also need to be able to be home every night and able be to have the time off if and when it's needed the most. I'm willing to learn how to drive the manual, but don't have the money to go to a CDL training school, and it seems like every truck company that offers training would be putting me through training and the I'd have to go do OTR (over the road) which is what I can't do with me having the younger kid's at home.

Please help any advise is greatly appreciated. Email me anything you think is helpful

Hi Heather Brown - thanks for sharing your story. I have heard from other members that the jobs that allow you to be home every night are generally saved for the tenured drivers. However, this does not mean that you can't find one.

Knowing how to drive a manual transmission will definitely b both a great life skill for you, but also increase your ability as a driver and trucker.

I would definitely still try reaching out to companies who offer CDL training. Let them know that you are very very interested in a role there but you do have children that you are the main caregiver of an aren't able to go OTR.

I hope this helps, and I look forward to seeing some other responses from other people in the community!!
