Career change

I currently have my BA is sociology, once actually in the field I have found that this is not my true passion anymore. How can I get into another field without any experience/specific education in that field?

Melissa Miller - I would definitely read through Anthony's comment here. It has some great advice on what you should think about, and how to approach the job search as you transition fields.

Best of luck, and keep us updated on how things work out!

Hi Melissa,

You first have to decide in what career path your passion lies, then make a game plan to get there. You have a degree, that is a huge plus as a lot of professional employers look for that. Your degree may not necessarily have anything to do with your dream job, but it shows a commitment to completing a task and a level of determination desired by many employers.

Figure out what it is you want to do, then begin crafting a resume that aligns the skills you have learned in the workforce with the skills of the job you desire. There is most likely some overlap.

Determine the keywords in the job posting and make sure your resume speaks to those keywords. Outline how your experience can help meet the needs of the employer.

Be persistent. You may find that you have to take a lower salary at first to get your foot in the door. Look for entry level positions with companies for whom you desire to work, if you can afford it.

Make connections with local businesses and their recruiters/HR staff on professional networking sites like LinkedIn and communicate with them about the open positions and ask them if you can send your resume.

Best of luck to you!
