How to answer a question?

I am unemployed at present. I have had several interviews but I either never hear) back or I get a rejection letter. On my resume I have a job listed that I was at for 21 years. When asked why I left that job my response is "for more opportunities". Should there be a different response to this question?

Assuming this is the reason you aren't getting calls back, I would try to be more specific. Such as, "I wanted experience in (fill in the blank), that was not available in this company. Or, there were too few opportunities for advancement . Something like that....

On top of that, you didn't address the employers question. A proper response would be something in your background like with me I quit because I went back to school, and I was a care taker for my elderly grandma. What you said isn't even an answer for that matter.

Diffently needed a different response. For more opportunities isn't a response they want to hear from someone that's only job was at 21 and don't seem you have any other job exsprirance down.

Your response does not truly answer the question, and may cause the interviewer to believe you are hiding something. Leaving a position without having another one always has to have a satisfactory explanation in order to make you competitive. Be honest and talk about issues that caused you to leave your job of 21 years --and dry run this explanation with some other, or a job counselor, to explain. Examples might be " I finished a project and there was no more work for me" or " my company was taken over by another firm, and the employees were systematically replaced by younger and cheaper workers, so I left." Whatever explanation you come up with, note that it may cause more questions, so be prepared. In my case, for example, my contract with DOD was dependent on a company low bid, and another company bid lower, causing me to lose my job at the end of the contract. Such things are business reasons that do not reflect on your employability, but do give satisfactory explanations. Good luck!

You should write a thank you letter to the employer that you interviewed with. That might give you a creative reason to answer the question you were asked.

Here's what I would do because it has worked for me in the past. 1-Awesome Resume. (every promotion, every thing you contributed to the company, etc) 2-Find out who the person is hiring. Get their full name and telephone number, plus extension. If you cannot get that, get their email. 3-When you call, be sure to address them professionally, smiling, and treating them like you have met before:) (always works) 4-Let them know this is the "dream job" you have been waiting for, and you definitely have what they are looking for (and some!) 5-Ask for the interview This is the way I go after jobs, and I get the jobs I want. (I am 67 years old and still going strong) 6-Always thank "them" for their time, interview, etc. THAT goes a long-g-g-g way, believe me! 7-Whatever the outcome, STAY POSITIVE:)

I have found that honestly it's all about who you know. If there's any way you can get a connection to the hiring manager that's your best bet. I've been laid off twice since 08 due to the economy and the market crashed. Every job I have gotten since age 16 except for one I knew someone who knew the hiring manager. And I have to tell you I've gotten rejection letters. I've even been on several interviews for companies where they have me go on 45 interviews. It's really rude because it spends a lot of time and gas money. And then for whatever reason even though some of these companies have recruited me they come up with an excuse. If you can get your resume in the hands of the hiring manager that is your best bet. I just got a job after being laid off for months and it's going to end up being almost 5 by the time I start. That was how I got the job. My resume was given to the hiring manager by an employee. And it was an employee that was respected and does very well for the company it's frustrating I know. I feel your pain but every good job I've got and I'm telling you that is how it's been. A lot of times they don't look at the long stack of resumes. They look 4 people they know or ask their own employees for recommendations. And I've also been on the other side of hiring so I will say that is definitely true. Managers are busy and still expected to cover their store or cover their business when they're short-staffed on top of interviewing hiring and training. It's almost impossible for them to get through a bunch of resumes. And I feel like when you do it online through HR it takes forever. If you get a call back it might be 6 months later.

One thing is, is the job and your age. How many years can you give them. You have to sell yourself and give your strengths. I wouldn't say better opportunities just that their company is what your more interested in. They won't hire someone who seeks better opportunities because if they hire you, you may seek other opportunities. Get it. Good luck on your job search. I am a Physical Therapist and own my own company with my wife as CEO.
