Job and Personal References
I had spinal tumors for 12 years and I lost a lot of friends. I haven't worked in over a decade, but I'm ready to get back. I'm signing up with a temp agency TOMORROW and I am not sure what I should do about job references. I do have one, but they want 3 and 3 personal references. I have one of those as well. I do not want to tell the agency about my back, even tho everything is great now and I've been in the clear for 4 years. Any advice on what I should do about references? I would really appreciate any advice.

#Good for you. A person with disabilities can earn companies Federal Money for hiring them. You can also find some work-at-home companies doing Telecommuter work. Not hard, flexible hours and check your local Cable companies for tech or Customer Service positions. I admire your get to it mind set. As for References, that can be difficult. People and often friends, are hesitant. Having been in your position I looked out-side the box. My Landlord agreed to be a reference because I was a good tenant, find someone you did a favor for, they are usually more than willing to return the kindness. Add a smile to everyone you meet and interview with and be enthusiastic and add. "Thank you so much for taking the time to speak with me. You really made my day!" You will find plenty of people willing to shine a reference, but sometimes you just got to "look- outside- the- box". By being a real person in front of the potential employee at a cattle call. Good luck! Thanks for reading my post and considering my suggestions. Don't be shy, you have been dealing with health issues which can be a full time life job.
Hey Rocco, Suggest you upload your resume or take a min to fill in the profile here on jobcase - that will help me, employers and other jobcasers best think of help/advice/connections, etc.
On this one, have you had any employment in last 12 years? If not, have you done any volunteering - school or otherwise? There are probably references you wouldn't normally think of that could be quite useful. One of the cool tools we created for you here is the 'get praise' button. Jobcase.com makes it easy for people to praise you here - once done, you keep it as yours forever (and since jobcase is free to use - its alway here for you for free!). Past teachers, friends, coworkers, anyone you volunteer with, church, etc. These all can be legitimate reference checks - just put in right category. I look forward to what other jobcasers might suggest, but do me a favor and drop me a line (click on picture and hit connect) after your profile or resume is up - that might spark some ideas on who you should connect with.
All that said - I do suggest talking to the agency about your specific situation. As a temp agency , they should be understanding of outlier experiences - and the reality will likely surface eventually... But that is up to you of course. Good luck. Thanks for being part of the jobcase community. Congrats on getting to a place where those tumors aren't holding you back as much anymore (sounds horrible - so sorry you had to endure that!) and please know you have a lot of jobcasers rooting for you!!!!
