Mom looking for school and work
I am a first time mom who just a baby five months ago. I'm looking to go to school for an LPN program. I am low income and I could really use the help. My goal is to work and go to school. Please help me. Anyone?
It a wonderful and obtainable goal! I went myself with three children. Apply online for financial aid @ FASFA.gov and apply to your local BOCES program or college. JTPA might also be able to help with cost of gas and daycare expenses. Good luck to you! I love being a nurse!! Kelly

Maria, I have been an LVN (same thing as LPN) for 24 years. I always told myself I would go back for RN but never did. My advice to you is to apply for every scholarship you can. I went back to school for Occupational Safety and Health. My second semester, I applied for and received a scholarship (Smith-Hutson) and they ended up paying for 2 degrees. They paid for that one and Process operating. Always be honest with them. They want the sad stories. If a 52 year old nurse can get 2 scholarships, so can you. Please don't stop at lpn. Try for a grant or scholarship for RN. They will pay your living expenses and child care. I wish you all the luck. There will be a lot of paperwork but it's more than worth it in the end.

Hi Maria, That's a lot to bite off for a new mom. If you set unachievable goals then you are more likely to call it quits. There is a lot of assistance available to you especially if you are a single parent. If that is the case then you may want to consider taking advantage of social services. Do not feel one bit ashamed. Your situation is exactly what it is there for while you make an effort to better yourself. I would also go for your RN. It is better pay, more flexible on many levels and well worth the little bet of extra effort. You will also be eligible for financial aide. Any college will help you with the process. Also most community college's have day care right on campus which you will also get financial assistance for. The financial assistance is the easy part the rest is up to you. You may have to take a few pre-requisit courses but that's a great way to ease yourself into the studies and figure out your own time management schedule with the baby. All you have to do is set up an appointment with guidance counselor at your local community college and they will give you excellent help the rest of the way. Very best of luck!
