To old or over qualified
There is one thing I have learned in my 37 years of roaming the work force, study who you want to work for. You need to know the company you want to work for before you even send them a cover letter and resume. You need to have a clear idea of the company goals and job you specifically want. Then create your cover letter to highlight the skills for that job specifically. You want to sell yourself to the employer, but not over sell yourself. Taking a chance and working for a temp to hire company is also a great way to return to the work force. They often pay weekly and allow you the flexibility to work different jobs to find a good solid match. Many temp companies also offer courses to enhance your skills and to perfect your interviewing process.

Update I am very particular about the temp services I choose. I treat it the same way I would any other employer. I do my research and read the reviews. I pay attention to what people who have worked for them or have hired their services say about them, how long have they been in business. I note how professional their job recruiters are an what they have in benefits an their typical pay scale for the work I am qualified to do. Some I do use Remedy Intelligent Staffing and Express Personnel Staffing. There are many others out there that are good agencies, but watch out for the bad ones. Those are the ones who are only looking to use you for a paycheck and they do not care at all about placing you in long term employment. Those are the ones who usually only have temp positions available and short work assignments.

Excellent points. Thanks.

Too old not to old. Sorry, it's a pet peeve! Your point is well taken! A 54 year old just hired by the Federal Government!

Just an update. I just recently got a new job and so far I am loving it. It is not a job that I had experience in, but one I do have the skills for. I got the job because I am willing to step out of my comfort zone. There were 40 other candidates for the job and my professionalism blew my interviewers away. An that was just being myself. How you present yourself or along ways.

That goes two ways far as studying it's a little hard to explain where you've been for thirty seven yrs hunh? Smoking crack & In a stamp bag stuper & god knows what else!

Cool.

Great advice.

Lawrence well said ...totally agree !! Happy New Years!!!

Do you know any good temp agencies?
