I worked 24 years and 9 months on a job and was laid off. I am totally confused right now. I am 3 months from being able to collect my pension benefits. I have been wronfully terminated and discriminated against. I have an Administrative Secretarial Science, Associates Degree and passed the Civil Service Examination for the position. I am 57 years old. I am a single parent. My son will be 22 years old in April. I am at a lost in my life right now! I do believe in God. He will make a way for me. He is a WayMaker!

I Annette how are you hope all is well. Sometimes God has to intervene on some of our situation in order to get our attention. With that said God may want to to give him some time so he can tell you what he want you to do. I hear a lot of people saying that they believe in God thanks fine but do you have a relationship with him have you been intimate with him that what he is looking for. Be blessed

RUN DO NOT WALK, TO A LAWYERS OFFICE. It used to be common to dump people after they had spent a life time with a company to save on pension benefits.

Congress changed the laws a decade or so ago to require pensions to be vested.

I am not a lawyer and I can't quote the laws, but look for a lawyer who advertises labor/employment law.

it sounds like you have a text book case.

Get a car, work for uber these last few months and claim your pension if you can, don't look at it like you lost something, look at it as THEY lost something, sometimes the good Lord steps in and say hey, look around, accept this and your mornings will always be sunshine

Annette; I really admire you to last that long for that company.. This is my opinion for every one; pls. remember; in this world theres no such permanent for good; each one of is vulnerable to loosing anything....It is profit probability; improvision; labor cutdown as an example of many....sorry that it happened....if u can take an early retirement then work part time ; i think that will e sufficiemt. Good luck....Dante. B

Annette that is absolutely awful! What was their reason for terminating you? Have you checked to see if you have any legal resources? There are a lot of free legal advising or very low cost monthly services out there. I am coming out of a very upsetting situation myself, I was doubting myself, then I remembered all of the years that I have been working to various companies satisfaction. Don't let them get you down - you should still be able to access that pension when you retire, no? Research your rights!

Annette its not just you it is so many people going through the same crap. I have been laid off three times since 2009, with my work experience alone (did not get my Bachelors until 2015) I was able to find another great opportunity fairly quickly each time. The longest I have stayed on one job is ten years so I do understand your confusion and fear for losing your job after almost 25 years, I would say I have many friends who were in the same boat and eventually they did find other positions. Today, it is a lot different than in 2009 or even 2014 my second lay off, it is taking on average 3months to 1 year to find another job so I would recommend getting your resume updated and submitted to as many companies ASAP, not sure if you were giving severance since you were terminated or not, I sure hope so because that will give you a little time to take a break and regroup. Good Luck in your next opportunity I know its not easy but you will end up okay, we all do eventually.

Well don't feel bad I worked for a company for almost 27 years and was let go o the word of two employees with less than six years with the company and they said that I told another employee not to bring stock to a machine , I worked my way up from the floor to become a supervisor and because I work in NY a right to work state where they can come up with whatever reason they want to let you go and in turn you don't have to give two week notices. there is not much you can do I am 56 1/2 and worked more than 1/3 of my life for this company and they don't care I got close to the magic number of age, # of years served that means your in and they will have to pay you for the rest of your life and they wanted me gone. don't ever give up on God cause he has never given up on you. My life has been nothing but hell for the last 11 years I got hurt on the last job I worked at and have been out of work cents 2013 and can no longer work and am having a hard time with a insur company and I hurt all the time am on 3 diff pain meds and am still in pain. If you still have your health move on no job is worth your health or your life, good luck and take it one day at a time you'll make it most CEO's are jerks and they will get what's coming to them.
