Giving out email addresses and phone numbers with out permission

I came to work today and found copies of all of the employees names, numbers, and email addresses sitting on a a counter. Apparently management printed multiple copies so that all of the employees would have each other's contact information in case they needed someone to cover their shift. I did not give permission nor would I have if they had asked. Isn't that illegal? I was not happy to see my name is the list, and now 75 strangers have my info.

Wow! How stupid of your company! Start looking for another job became if this is the type of stupidity u have to deal with what's next? If anything the boss shouldve made known in writing that if u r going to be off on a day that u r suppose to be on it is your responsibility to have both parties contact or go to hr or have a written letter signed by both individuals and submitted in a timely manner. Also if the person who is suppose to cover your shift doesn't for any reason and other arrangements aren't made to cover the shift it goes against the initial person and if done more than twice( shift not covered) a write up will be the consequence ( 3 is automatic dismissal)or after 3 times ( shift not covered) the initial person will be terminated. Your boss is an idiot cuz there r crazy ppl out there who will risk misusing such info! Ugh!

These is no duty of privacy owed to you by your employer. However, if someone in your company causes you any harm by using your information, your employer could be held liable.

It is perfectly legal. Your phone number and email address is not protected information. Most businesses have employee directories containing employee email addresses and phone numbers.

You don't have to give your permission. It is 100% legal.

I had an issue with this kind of situation and expressed it to my supervisor, constantly asking for phone numbers and writing them in different papers and then left for all to see. I believe it's not correct.

Hard worker looking to learn!

I love this question. I had a job early on in my career where the manager shared a similar list and was constantly harassed and pressured into covering shifts. Interested to see what other's have to say about this.
