Looking for a good paying job is tough

I have been unemployed for more than 4 months now and my severance pay just ended. Now I have my unemployment to depend on which doesn't even come close to my old salary. I have had a few interviews, but almost everyone passes me up because they say I am "over qualified", a nice way of saying you're too old. Or they will not even talk to me because I have not finished my bachelors degree yet, never mind I am currently enrolled in school and have over 20 years of experience. My favorite excuse is that they cannot come close to my previous salary. I'd happily take less, I just am not able to work for less than 45k per year. I cannot afford to be in the hole each week after I pay child care for two 3 year olds.

My former director of credit and collections called me yesterday, she was laid off with me. She told me that she had faced the same struggles that I have faced. She also told me that she found it to be more fruitful to apply directly to a company on their site versus going through job boards and recruiters. This is how she got her new job, although it was a huge pay cut for her. I have been doing both, but I think I will just follow her advice and go directly to the company's site to apply. Maybe I'll have better luck.

I understand Chandra all too well what you're talking about. After my last layoff back in 2013, I took a contract position that was flexible enough to allow to complete my BSc in Environmental Science. It was quite a struggle financially but I managed and was very careful how I spent and used money. Again, my only goal was my bachelor's. I was very fortunate from last employer. Now I work for City and County which is great. Hang in there, it can get better. Although I didn't face the same thing you're dealing with, just maintain your focus and do what you can, when you can. Also, there is help available. Just reach out and apply. I promise, it does get better.

What are you studying in school, and where does most of your experience reside? It sounds like you received a nice severance. You are right in that unemployment insurance is a joke. I love how it caps out regardless of what you were earning before you were displaced from your job.

just pray to god. he'll do all the work. well according to some on here anyways. I'm thinking I'll just get god to do the work for me. I mean if he can get the job I figure he won't mind doing the work and all. and the kicker is nobody will ever even know he was there!

I know how you feel. I just finished my degree and I only have 5 years work experience. I get the 'overqualified' excuse as well but I'm 25. I have two kids and student loans, yet I can only get low-paying jobs cause I'm considered young. It messes with you either way. Good luck.

Community Relations Specialist at Itt Technical Institute

Hi Chandra. I too live in the Dayton area and after loosing my job (3 years ago on the 27th of this month) I had a very difficult time finding work. I am convinced I was discriminated against because of my age. I have multiple degrees and over 30 years' experience. I landed many interviews but there was always "something: that seemed to "disqualify" me from the position. I was actually told I would be able to[physically perform the duties required, even though I was doing very demanding physical work painting (I was told this in the 4th interview...go figure). I was sure I had landed the job at another interview (for a position I was VERY excited about). The interview, scheduled for 1 hour lasted 2+ and everyone there was nodding in a positive manner. Then...NO FURTHER CONTACT...either way!

It takes a special employer to see the value of a seasoned employee. Long story short...I worked odd jobs...just enough to pay the bills (painting for a friend of mine). Last August I applied for a PT position posted in the newspaper and landed the position. I work full-time hours but am classified as PT (no benefits...arggg) - hoping they will turn that around after they have had the ability to evaluate my work ethic and the improvements I have been able to make in my position.

Good luck in your search - I'll be watching on this board to follow your progress.

That's what I do. I use the job boards to find job openings then I go to the company websites to apply directly. Mixed success but this strategy keeps me from having to fill out five different profiles before I get to the application.
