What’s the difference between a preloader and a sorter? I’m applying for a warehouse job and the company has these two positions available in my town. I was thinking about applying for both but I don’t want to give managers the impression that I don’t know what I want. The online job descriptions don’t provide enough detail. My goal is to get in my application as soon as possible so I welcome any help. Thanks

Great morning Lamont. I know several people that work in warehouse logistics, and a few preload the product. I was in transportation for 14 years and I know that a preloader's position goes through the warehouse looking for all products that need to pickup each day. Their responsibility is to assure that everything that needs to be picked up has been prepped and placed at the dock being ready to be picked up. Now the sorter's job is a simple, but not easy position. The sorter's duties are to go through EACH box(outside)/pallet to make sure that it's place in the correct row. In a warehouse everything is alphabetized(supposedly) in chronological order to assure that when product is received from a Distribution Center or Store-to-Store it is placed in the correct place per in order. If something is out of order usually the BOSS is the one to catch it (NOT GOOD). I used to hear my associates say that before each day is done they do a dry run (ride around each row) to make sure that nothing is out of place. I'd say Lamont to think of what YOU feel is YOUR best skill, because if either of them are on your resume, then I would say put them BOTH on there as a skill that you have. If only one is on your resume then it would be best to choose THAT skill, as they will know that you have experience in that department.....GREAT LUCK TO YA

I have worked a sorter before. The job is basically making sure each package that comes down the conveyor belt gets assigned to the proper geographic or zip code bin for loading. It's a physical job so expect to be busy. Supervisors will tell you to focus on accuracy but speed counts.
Example: UPS - FedEx A preloader is responsible to load packages into 3 trucks for the driver's route(s). There is a load chart that spells out how and where the packages are placed on the truck depending on address. A sorter takes packages from the primary inbound unload belt and sorts them by zip code to multiple secondary belts. Both shifts are about 4 - 5 hours.
