Kathy

I am a 62 year old retired elementary school teacher. I would like to continue working at a clerical type position, so am planning on taking some computer courses. However, I am wondering if this will be a waste of my time. Will employers employ an older person ? I am not able to financially retire at this time, but the stress of teaching was affecting me physically and emotionally.

Hi, Do not indicate your age with any dates on your resume, even graduation dates. All computer classes are worth while.

Hi Kathy I can appreciate your struggle, I too am 62 and just retired from teaching. And I too need to work still. I would encourage you to take the computer classes as it never hurts to learn new things and you never know what doors may open for another employment opportunity!! Take care!

I am running in to a lot of opposition. One area that has been successful is community support work. You get choice in who you work with, and you can be your own boss. I recently resigned from wake county schools because they are not "senior friendly". let me know if you need more info Mark

I will be 60 this summer. I am taking online classes through www.ed2go.com, and they are great! They cost $109 for a 12-session program you can take pretty much at your convenience. I like it a lot. I have also been told of a place for freelancers who want to work from home (like me), but have not tested it yet: www.upwork.com Good luck!

Hello Ms. Jones! Employers should base their decision to hire a canadiate base on his or her qualifications and experiences. Not their age. Don't start your search thinking negative or second guessing. Yes there are positions more suitable for a more physical capable person. Like heavy lifting and etremely lots of walking, but whose to say 40-65 can't participate equally.
I think you should continue building your profile by taking computer classes, short hand, and even taking classes to help build techiques to relieve work related stress. None of these self enhancement outlets will be considered a waste of time. Great questions! Good luck!

Hi Kathy, It's never a waste of time to improve your skills! There are lots of ways to do this, from on-line/self-guided courses to classes at your local library. Any investment of your time will pay off in some way. Like Carlos suggested, recruiters will definitely be looking for current skills. Good luck! Let us know how it goes, ok? Best, Marijoy

Resourceful and Always Willing To Help Others!

hey Katherine, I don't think taking computer classes would be a waste of time. In fact, I think demonstrating you're career growth initiative would serve to attract more recruiters to your resume. Have you looked into work from home opportunities? There's allot of companies offering virtual support customer service positions. Workforce Solutions, Amazon, Aetna, and United Healthcare are companies currently hiring. Visit their website and take a look at the job descriptions and application process if your interested.
