Quit..go back??

Hi, 3 months ago I quit a promiseing construction management position. A promotion for me was mentioned earlier in the year by construction President. Though in just 2 years they rotated the lead Superintendent 4x. Every time new one came on it was like starting over for me, literally the most stressful part of the job. They would come on board implementing the way they managed at their last employer, regardless of the way I had been doing it. The 4th one was final straw though. He insisted I CC him on all my emails/texts to vendors and would criticize me in the message regarding my choice of words, totally destroying the repor I had built with Vendors. Tension was building up and one day he emailed me a list of labor tasks, I was already stretched thin and at wits end so I confronted him, aggressively I might add, only pertaining to the list though, nothing personally. He responded by verbally insulting my work ethic. I took it all in and sent my area manager a letter the following Monday describing all the insults, and gave my notice. They offered to relocate me but I wanted to explore other options. Corporate contacted me and said no one likes to be micro managed, and even though they don't consider what he said harassment, they would give me the option not to go back, so I didn't. 3 months later and employment prospects are not panning out, I got a call from a co-worker there, and he asked how I was doing, he said if I'm not working I should ask to come back, a different location of course. He thinks all is good and they most likely will take me back. Im studying for a Building Inspector certification so I can get better paying job as Inspector. I have failed the test once already and am ready to try again. Each attempt cost me $200. Problem is that this certification doesn't guarantee me a job, in fact I may not pass exam at 2nd or even 3rd attempt. My better half is working and totally supports my decisions made. Though I can see her losing her patience if I don't pass exam at next attempt. She doesn't know that I'm considering asking to go back, it's highly likely she doesn't want me to go back. Obviously I can't say anything to her, because if they shoot me down I don't want her to know. But if they consider and I don't pass exam, I would tell her I'm going back...she could still say no, and that's fine I just want to make her happy, and if she is ok w/me continueing attempts at exam then great. So, should I ask past employer if I can go back? Should I even go back??

Just like you found your wife there is a job that is a perfect fit for you. That said, To hell with employers who do not promote based on merit and job performance! But that's my opinion. My advice is to you is that you spend your mental energy focusing on all the great aspects your new (or old) job needs to have for you and Wifey's personal happiness. Be strong bro don't let this hurdle push you to take a job or a salary you Hate! The cost is too high. Never Compromise.

You are obviously intelligent but your priorities are off-centered. Make your wife happy is always job number one. Make her proud to be your partner in life. Buckle your butt down and pass this exam. Leave stickees of self confidence and your love for your wife all around your home. Especially, mirrors, cabinets, your iPhone, computer screens refrigerators and your wife's pillow. Be funny, study smartly, relax and enjoy life. Pass this exam and the world is your oyster. Only my very best to you in life and love.

Try going back but set limits and terms. Know which ones you are willing to compromise on and which are non negotiable before you contact them. That way, if they come back with a counter offer you already know what you want to work with and let them know a different location/ supervisor is necessary. This way you can also justify and talk with your wife about more attemps on the test if you don't pass the 2nd attempt. Maybe talk to your wife about going back if you get a counter offer before you accept it as well. This way she doesn't feel like you are excluding her.

I think you should try going back under your terms. At least, you'll know the outcome and if you get it, you can take the test with a clearer head and less pressure...less money worries should improve your test results. If you don't get it, pursue jobs that will cover some bills and still free you up to have less stress while studying for your test.

I wish you all the best for your upcoming test. Only my opinion, I would certainly let your better half know about thoughts of returning to your previous employer. I am sure she will be very supportive, regardless of what happens.

At this point move on! If they passed up up 4 times, time to move on. Been there!! Just left a job of 10 years for the same reasons. HR department basically laughed at my complaint. Sounds like the ol' buddy system is everywhere! Never give up your self respect or your values for any employer. Of your girl cares, she'll stand behind you! It will get stressful, even feel hopeless, before it gets better. But it will get better. As for your test. Don't take it until you are ready. Study it! Know it!
Go page by page. Chapter by chapter. Section by section. Find that particular nitch that you have to learn. What works for one person, doesn't always work for another! Good luck! Remember.... Can't never did nothing!!!
