Warehouse Picker & Packer

Starting a warehouse associate job next week. Any tips to prepare?

The position is pretty straight forward and I've heard horror stories but I've also heard good stories and people managing quite fine. This is a seasonal job but I want to do well so I can get hired full time eventually. The warehouse itself doesn't look too big but they did mention several times that I'll be walking 10-15 km each day I'm there and maybe lifting up to 50lbs 5 times per day, but no more than that. Are there any exercises I can beforehand so I can get my body ready to handle that much walking for 4-5 days at a time? How should I approach getting hired as a permanent employee?

Congrats on the new job. I worked in Shipping myself and here are a few tips to remember:

  1. Learn to drive a forklift if you do not know how already
  2. Hone your Math Skills
  3. It is better to Print than use cursive
  4. Always, Always Triple Check Your Work. Read the order first to clearly understand what it says to avoid confusion later. Pull the order and dbl ck. and last, before you place the invoice on the shipment, dbl ck again.
  5. Make sure your aware of all safety procedures
  6. Bend at the knees when lifting
  7. Always show willingness to help others if it does not interfere with your job first
  8. If you see a mistake, bring it to someones attention, It is not a mistake unless it reaches the customer Catch it in-house first before it goes out the door.
  9. Do not become offensive when someone catches one of yours, for they are your back up eyes. You are all a team and there is no "I" in TEAM
  10. Most importantly...Learn how to Breathe

Hey Eric, Congrats on the new job! Josh makes a good suggestion and I recommend you give that a try but if it’s a package handling position you can expect to be busy from day one. Your body is going to feel the pain of them job no matter how much you prepare but the key thing to remember is that each day your body will condition itself to the demands of the position and the work will get easier, (give it about a month before you notice the difference). Don’t get discouraged because because of the physical demands! Sups and managers understand that it takes time to adjust. Demonstrate a good attitude and volunteer for extra hours when asked any you’ll be a good candidate for F/T employment. Good Luck!!!
