Working with a diva

I’m on a super small sales team, which you’d think would a good thing, right? Well it’s not, because I work with the biggest diva in the world. He thinks he’s sooooo important to the company that he can’t be bothered doing stuff he considers to be beneath him. He also talks down to me in a way that just makes me see red. The ego is huge on this guy, and it’s driving me nuts!

I feel your pain, Joan. That is how my manager treats me. Yes he is my "manage" but that is really a title of necessity rather than any accelerated management "skills". If it helps, I keep a log of things so that at anytime I can have the documentation ready should I need it to defend myself.

Sales Representative at Advantage Sales And Marketing

My advise would be to get as far away from him as possible. You don't mention whether he is competent or not but I was just fired from a sales position where I was number 12 nationwide by an incompetent manager who was threaten because they did not know how to do their job, that I did not even want.

Joan, there are always going to be people in the work place that take advantage of people such as yourself. How do you think people scale the ladder. Put your foot down and tell this person that he is part of the team and he needs to do his part so the goal is accomplished. If you do not say something he will continue to treat you this way. If you have adressed the issue with him and he continues then you need to speak with a supervisor. If he's doing it to you I'm sure he is doing it to other team members.

Joan, Tell him to get over himself. Tell him to stop talking to you that way. Tell your supervisor. He's just doing it because he knows it bother's you to death. Ignore him. Once he is knocked down from his high horse he will see no one is paying attention to him and maybe he will stop. You are better than this stuff so start acting like it. Men aren't Diva except RuPaul men are just blow hard trying to get attention Good luck, Tell on him . lisa Renwick .

Asst Manager at Aerus Llc Formerly Electrolux

I am with J Bradshaw on this one Joan. If it is a sales team... then Divas are to be expected. Become the team leader without explanation or exception. My last diva was in 1994 and he then became our VP. Even when I was forced to resign, my documentation and journal records illustrated several conflicts with in the selling process. It does not matter how good you are, if no one wants to work with you, or you can't work with anyone, it's really not a team, huh. Patience is a virtue. Down the line there will be plenty of organizations who will see your effectiveness and resolve in handling this so called team member.

Sounds like jealousy to me. I agree with some of the others. Big sales people are usually not leaders. Be the leader, help the team to succeed you will be noticed more for being able to handle difficult situations than he will for his sales. But sales require closers.
