Controller at Koster American Corporation

Too old or over-qualified

I am 64 years old. I lost my job as a Controller after 6 years at the end of November. I can't afford to retire. I actually got my bachelor's degree in November 2016 while working full-time even though I have been an accountant all my life. Even though I was a controller in my last job I don't mind at all taking a job as a senior staff accountant or accounting manager. I am feeling like I am being discriminated against for my age, but I also feel that no one wants to hire me as an accountant thinking I'm over qualified. Any suggestions?

I understand your concern but you can’t change your age so don’t waste any time worrying about those companies that refuse to hire you over such a biased issue. Believe me, they are not worth your time.Turn your mental ageism/age discrimination switch in your brain to the OFF position and focus on what you want. If you get a call back for an interview then the companies interested in hiring you. Focus on establishing a connection with the interviewer from the initial handshake. Emphasis your experience, skills, and open mindedness to accept change and collaborate with team members. Your age makes no difference as long as you’re excited and committed to performing the job.
