Think of it like 'Facebook for your worklife" but instead of being connected to just your current set of friends we'll use some technology to connect you to the right set of folks depending on whatever your questions/concerns are.
hope that helps explain. As for your direct question about profile. Here are a few things to think about with it:

1. Wherever you are, you now can get a resume./cover letter out to anyone with a couple taps on your phone. We keep any resumes you upload for a choice of sending, but you can always auto-generate a resume from your profile. So if you ever meet someone anywhere who knows of an opportunity - you always are prepared to apply.
2. We promote our membership to employers everyday. And unlike other firms - we would never charge them to find and recruit our members. We are advocates for you - so having your profile updated increases chances that employers will proactively reach out to you.
3. Having your profile updated helps others in the community be able to best offer thoughts and advice (often someone might ask about promotion or jobsearch or internal work-politics issues - having info about the persons workflow helps others with context for helping.
4. This is yours. If you click the praise buttons you can easily ask coworkers, bosses, direct reports, customers for praise of your work and you have it with you always (can hide it or show it - your options in "Myinfo" section). This is great because it not only helps Employers get a better sense of what you have to offer but it also makes it so you don't need to go asking again and again - it just lives here with you once someone praises you one time.
