Many skills, but no offers yet?

I have been looking for work forever as it seems, and I've gotten several over the phone interviews and a hand full of in person, but still no job offers. I cannot work 2nd shift, and 1rst is a possibility, but in the near future. My preference to work is for 3rd shift and its seems as though everyone is hiring for second.

I have cashiered, worked in a bank, worked as a security officer and have worked in warehouses, but still nothing!

I have made this clear on my resume', that 3rd is my preference, but I still get have gotten interest in jobs that have only second shift positions, or ones where they work 2-2-3 schedule, or 12 hour rotating shifts.

It was no problem to work 12 hours before, but I have kids and I help take care of my ailing parents now, and no one to help watch them for those type hours. What else can I do to keep from having callbacks on jobs I cannot work?

Can you break out to a parallel type of job. It seems you want the positions everyone wants. If you can't " get in" and transfer to the slot you prefer, look for something similar, but new. ..it'll add to your resume late on, also.

Hello Nischelle, hope all is well with you and your family today. I just read your post and wanted to give you some advice because I have walked in your shoes too often. Please don't take anything the wrong way. Though you may have lots of job skills this will keep happening. You may somehow and with lots of prayer if that is in your being; pray for guidance and

I fully understand, because of health I am changing careers myself and every application they see I was a truck driver and security officer on grave yard shift so they assume that's all I want to do. How do you get job experience in other areas if they don't give you a chance??? If your. Older is seems to be even harder. I recently interviewed for a job with lots of experience and it was a goo d fit but my experience was from several years back and not recent. ( It's like riding a bycycle you never forget how but it just takes a few tries to get back in the groove!!)

Security

You may have to go back to warehouse work (they are always looking). There are a lot of security jobs that want over-night guards. A lot of supermarkets look for over-night stockers. Don't put what hours you need on your application or resume; get the offer first after the interview.

Nishelle, when something isn't working for you the way you are going at it, try looking at things from another angle. 1st I can't say enough about Walgreens. I worked there part time and if you have a 24 hour one near you, they are more than likely needing overnight help. They don't always advertise - at least not here. I called some stores in my area to see if they had hours available and they did. I actually enjoyed working there more than are my full time job and when I accepted another full time position I was more upset about having to leave Walgreens.

2nd and this will take more commitment but it will be worth it in the long run...if you don't like your options, change your situation to give yourself more of them. Have you thought about going back to school and going after something you'd really like to do? With online courses and since you are available for overnight work, look for grants, financial aid, help from your community as someone else suggested and maybe make gong to school your "job" for the next couple of years and give yourself better options. Say nursing - don't know if you have any interest in that at all but that's a field that will always need round the clock help.

Just some suggestions. Good luck to you. I know from experience- it's rough out there.

Hi Nischelle: First of all, don't lose hope! There is a job out there for you. For some companies, you may have to take what shifts they have until after your probationary period is up during which time you may need to reach out to your support network (e.g. other family members, church, community, etc.) for help with your parents while you work. Maybe look for more family oriented companies to apply to like Starbucks. My other suggestion would be that in some states, you can get paid by the state or county for being a home help provider or primary, in-home care giver. The pay is usually not much, but at least it can help out. Whether there is a certification process to go through, you'll have to find that out by checking out the programs available. While I was finishing my undergrad degree in MI, I was a home help provider for my adult, autistic son and got paid by the county. It wasn't much, but helped out a little. Perhaps your state or county has a program like that.

I just got a job at Starbucks, the company as a whole is very family oriented and has great benefits. I told them on my resume that I was available mostly mornings and some nights. When I went for my interview and saw they were wowed by my experience I let the know that I had a second job and that I could only work mornings and 4pm the latest. I also let them know that I needed Mondays and Thursdays off and would prefer to have off on Sundays when possible so I can have a day with my 6 year old daughter. I was hired, I love the job and have had no issues. There are Starbucks that are open 24 hours also. If there is one near you it does not hurt to try.

Highly experienced

Nischelle,, As I have posted on here numerous times, while I have found full time employment, and my situation is vastly different from yours, I have kept and continue to keep my options open. I have two other opportunities that have arisen and yes, being very fortunate for those, it comes with the decision to leave one position because of the demands of the particular company and of scheduling. I did get in the door, followed the training and organization structure and discovered that this isn't for me and to move on. Any decision in regards to employment and family schedules is difficult and the choices are difficult in today's world. Stay as positive as you can, get inside, work as much as you can and definitely keep all options open. Take care.

Wow! I thought my issues were tough to work around. My daughter & granddaughter live with me & I babysit around my work schedule so my daughter can work & go to school herself.

My personal experience has shown that very few companies are "flexible WHEN IT COMES TO SHIFT HOURS ETC If they are, they usually don't pay much as a trade off.

I came to the realization this year that I can't be burning the candles at both ends indefintily --something had to give. I told my daughter she needed to put her daughter in preschool part time & get others in the family to help pitch hit.

We can't be all things to all people ad priorities must be set. I can't help my daughter if I am not able to take care of myself...its the airplane theory...when the oxygen drops down, put it on you first, then surrounding people even if a minor.. otherwise, you won't be there to help them at all. Kudos to the 2 gentlemen who are juggling so many priorities. Quest remember to take care of yourself, because you may find one day--no one else willl take care of you should you need it.

Good luck and keep looking. Have you considered remote work?
