when a company posts an employment opportunity says "private company" contacts you via gmail hangouts, conducts on-line interview and hires you, sending you "checks" is this a legal company? When you look them up on the web they have a history, but is it real? After all anyone today can create a web. How do you know if the offer is real?

The google hangouts is definitely your first red flag. The second red flag is they want to send you a check before you've even done some work. Definitely a scam.

Today it seems that everyone is out to "get you" with scams, expecially when the job market is so tight. If someone sends you an invitation to join their company: first, make sure you applied for this job through a reputable job hunter or career placment company - IF NOT STOP, propably a "SCAM." Remember to research the companies before applying for any job/career. Best advice DO YOUR HOMEWORK! Remember if someone offers you a check or wants you to scope out realty "red flag" no company will ask you to do that; also if you take their check, the banks can investigate to make sure the check is legimate and hold it for a length of time to see if it clears. If it sounds to good to be true, chances are its not.
