What do you think is the fairest compensation for overtime worked?

  • a) Time and a half (150% of your normal pay per hour)
  • b) Double time (200%, or twice your normal pay per hour)
  • c) Flextime later in the week (leaving early on a different day)
  • d) Payment in kind - meals, sports, or entertainment tickets
  • e) Something else - share in the comments

Depends on the overtime needed. For a standard M-F 9-5, hours added either at the beginning or end of a shift, time and a half. Weekends and holidays? That and a meal I'd call a deal.

But... Overnights, swing shifts, those are such a pain and so hard to recover from if they happen regularly. Might just need to renegotiate my entire damn pay rate at that point.

Many of those are poor options. A. is required by law, unless you are Exempt. B. is a fairy tale unless it's a holiday and written in your Employee Handbook, and not required if you're Exempt C. Doesn't work unless you're Exempt. You would be off the clock, and therefore not paid for those hours D. is chargeable and reportable as wages, so even though you don't see the money, taxes get taken out of your check

There are rules governed by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and there is a 'Duties Test'...

https://www.twc.texas.gov/news/efte/salary_test_for_exempt_employees.html P.S. This may say "Texas" in the URL but they're just passing along the Federal Law...
