Unfair and favoritism

I work in retail and have been told for almost 10 years that I could not get full time because of my availability. I am a single mom with no family or friends to help raise my child. So I have been passed by and looked over, but I stayed because positions are flexible. Well now a girl has been with the same company just over 2 years, got a lead position and is allowed to bring her child to work!!!!! I am so angry. I don't know what to do. Try calling corporate and they just refer me back to my store coach who by the way already knows about the child being there. What should I do?!?!

Reset Lead at Kmart

Hey everyone, just wanted to update everyone that it has been some time since my original post and since my coworker has been allowed to bring her child a total of 7 times -that I am aware of. It is absolutely not fair. She is allowed to do whatever she wants, work her own hours and do absolutely nothing!!!! I am so frustrated that words cannot even express. Management just adores her because of her sympathetic stories of her husband being in jail. Everyone has personal problems- that should not be brought to work. Why is it that certain employees are treated way better and differently than everyone else? Not fair, not ok and definitely what I signed up for. Already looking for anything else...

Attitude usually has a lot to do with it. Years ago a co -worker introduced me to a poem by Charles Swindoll. It is entitled, "Attitude." Check it out.

Carrie, This is totally unfair. Call the Better Business Bureau. Call some one higher up that your current chain of command.. That is clear discrimination . They can not offer child care to one and not all that might need it. Where do you live? I will contact the store myself if needed. You do not need to put up with this and should stand your ground.. Chin up!!! It will work itself out. I'll help in any way I can. Lisa Renwick

Wow! Carrie am sorry to hear this. If it is possible speak with an attorney or labor board. I don't know if your claim is legitimate from legal point because you may have to document that you inquired and such but this is really unfair. Noticed you are in Rockford area and jobs are not plentiful there but I would at the very least start looking. Good Luck!

Shift Lead Registered Pharmacy Technician at Walgreena S Saint Petersburg

Firsts off, what did you put on your initial application? Retail is designed for multiple shifts or availability. I have done this for 20 years, and although this sounds what you do not want to hear. Truth be told the company had no decision in creating life. They are there for businessbusiness, and that is all. You or anyone else will not accelerate in a position if your restrictions are so clearly geared towards yourselves. Get babysitting help, and move forward. LAST, WHY DO PEOPLE INSIST ON JUMPING CHAIN OF COMMAND? where does this get you....

This is very common in the work place today and favoritism lets worthless employees get promoted when good employees are overlooked because your not buddies with the boss. The only thing I would recommend id keep very detailed documentation for a period of time. If this continues you could always take it to a lawyer and get a free consultation based on discrimination. If the lawyer thinks you could win they will take the case on a percentage basis. Never pay a lawyer up front , this because if they don't think you can't win they might try to just take your money. The only other option is look for another flexible job or temp work. Sorry, it sounds like a tough case to win but if you have enough documentation, the employer could have to pay out a lot.

Just a thought but...

Have you studied this persons work habits and/or the dynamics at the work-place and possibly tried emulating?

(It COULD be entirely an interpersonal and/or work place politics thing though)

Bakery Asst Manager Cake Decorator at Maceys

I live in Utah and work for Macey's grocery stores and I went to corporate and human resources over a complaint that I had and after a year and 8 months of working 6 days a week and never asking for a day off and working all the overtime they asked me, it seemed that once I filed my complaint with HR I was no longer there role model employee sometimes I think it's worth keeping your mouth shut if we need the paycheck I know it sucks it's not fair it's not right butt in the long run if you have mouths to feed and you depend on that check every week start looking for another job and give them your notice otherwise if you're in my shoes they slowly weeded me out and push me right out the door!
