How accurate are salary guides?

How can I use salary guides to negotiate employment salaries? Are they dependable resources and what the difference between a guide and a calculator?

Remember its a guide - so error bars on both sides of the estimate. BUT, this link to careeronestop does a pretty good job of giving you an idea about fair market wages.... http://www.careeronestop.org/explorecareers/plan/salaries.aspx

Hi Dan: Salary guides are usually pretty accurate. They tell you what others are earning in your area in your field, which is essential for salary negotiations. It gives you an idea of what might be too much money to ask for, and what's too little pay for what you do. Use it as an estimate - after all, it's not the final say in how much you should be making!
