Recruiting a Mentor
I’m not sure how to go about asking someone at work about mentoring me. Which is a better option email or verbal?

I think either way would be fine. If it is someone you see regularly at work, maybe in person is a good idea. That way you can get more set up right then and there.

I would suggest sitting down with them and asking them in person. Tell them you respect them, want to learn and grow from their experience, guidance and expertise. You'd like them to ask to be your mentor. They won't be able to say no this way.
One important thing to think about is what you want from your mentor. I'd suggest taking the time to really consider this, the time commitment and specific guidance, advice and things you want from them. This will really help you set expectations and they can also understand what is involve, what success looks like for you and the time commitment they will be making.
Best of luck!
