Surgical Technologist at Greenwood Leflore Hospital

A Time of Despair

I am a Certified Surgical Technologist. I graduated from an accredited program in June of this year. Shortly after, I landed a job at a hospital nearby. However, my happiness was short-lived two weeks ago when I was informed that they were letting me go because of lack of experience. I am confident that I will be a great asset in this field if giving the proper chance. However, it seems as if most hospitals & outpatient clinics only want to hire people who have previous experience. Despite a few employees opinions about my work ethics at that institution, I believe I learned a lot in my short time there. I really hope I can find a job in this field soon because I don't want to lose the skills that I have learned. Any suggestions?

I certainly understand. I have run into similar experiences where I have the qualifications, just not the experience. Unfortunately, you can't get the experience if you are not given a chance. The best advice is to keep trying. Eventually, someone may decide to give you the chance and all you need is that one chance to make your career.

This is a very sad reality--hiring only those with experience. How do you get experience if they don't give you a chance? Could the program from which you just graduated help with contacts or direction or referrals? Could you try a Teaching Hospital? In Chicago, where I live, there is the RUSH University Hospital group, and they have several locations and outreach locations within that group. They are a teaching hospital, and I am always meeting new students or interns when I visit my doctors. Keeping you in my prayers.

As a Christian, I always ask God for direction. There is that perfect job out there for you. Keep the faith and don't give up. Look for a company that is looking for skills that align with your course of study, you may also look for a position that will optimize your degree while giving you a chance to build up the necessary experience. Best wishes and I will keep you in my prayers.

Check out the V.A. Hospital via USAJobs.gov. I know first hand, they will hire for certain positions after you have worked for them at a lesser job.

Congrats on your recent certification. Do you have a back up skill that can support until you find another opportunity and is it possible to volunteer or recert to stay sharp? Do you have any connections that you can converse for leads? Stay up

So what was the gripe about your "work ethics".. perhaps if you address this concern you will get a better reference and learn from it. Good luck.

I am a Career Coach. You should review your chances of volunteering. Have you thought about teaching?
