Temp Agencies

I am looking for a new job. This after a terrible experience with a supervisor and manager at my last position.

My problem is that every job I am interested has been listed by temp agency. This has become a very frustrating problem. Previously, I have been working for some temp agencies for this reason. How can you find a decent job that is not temporary but actually hiring?

Hi Nancy I'm tired of temp agencies simply because I'm trying to figure out who they are actually hiring. I went to one last week the specialist had me believing he had two positions located in different parts of the county. When I contacted him this week he didn't remember anything he had discussed. He concentrated on if I had any prospects so he could contact HR on my behalf. I was taken aback I'm not going to find my own job and let him know so he can make a commission off of me. Ultimate Staffing stay away from this agency.

Do be afraid to target jobs that you may have to relocate in order to work for thief companies. Sometimes you have to leave home in order to return to your home. Am employed person is more appealing to companies, so leave home, and transfer back home later.

I am also looking for a job. I have applied for over 100 jobs. Finally settled on a temp agency once my unemployment benefits ran out. It doesn't pay what I was making but it's income and I have insurance. I was on my last job for 13 yrs before being laid off. Started as a temp and was hired perm. Promoted 3 times. So don't give up on temp agencies. Sometimes they work out for the best. Good luck

Sometimes they ARE hiring, but they use the temp agency to fill the void in the mean time and/or the company may view the temp agency as a recruiting tool. People absolutely go "temp to perm" often. Sometimes th temp agencies even advertise the jobs as "temp to perm"

Hi Nancy,

I would change the sites that you are looking at or change the keyword searches. If you are only finding positions with a temp agency, I would let them know that you are only interested in full-time permanent or direct hire positions and then they will move you to another department that handles those types of positions. I would search LinkedIn, they have a lot of jobs available or people of interest for the types of company's that you are looking to work for. Be patient and everything should work out. Good luck!

Hi Nancy, please know that it is a full time job looking for a job. To get the job you want you need to spend hours a day researching job openings in your area and applying for them. Also, you need to go to staffing agencies or employers directly. The competition is strong, good luck!

Best to search directly on company sites. Those resources typically list jobs by part-time, full-time, contract, and seasonal. Most 'job boards' don't provide 100% accurate info, and are spammed across dozens of listings.

Decent companies don't utilize 'job boards' for openings. Best to go straight to the source. Check the 'careers' link or 'job opportunities' link on company sites for best results. Then one can apply directly and skip the middle-man bs.

Companies have the temp agencies filter qualified candidates and interview them for these firms, passing on the info and application/resume for consideration for the position, then you get paid by the temp agency as their employee while the temp agency gets paid by the firm to cover the cost of the temp. I worked for temp agencies here in Madison and found out the system after working for them in one of their offices after getting hurt on the job. Apply to the job doesn't hurt.

Nancy, A lot of companies use temp agencies to meet an immediate, short-term goal and that has become more common in the past few years. They also use temps as a means to screen potential candidates. As Mariah pointed out, try company sites. There are also other websites like Ziprecruiter.com, Linkedin, and Careerbuilder that list permanent and contract positions.
