Over qualified and in debt
I am a former soldier of 26 years and a veteran teacher of 24 years. I have two MAED's an MBS, a BS in business, an associate degree in Paralegal studies and I am a certified tax associate. In addition, I have a teaching license with an administrative endorsement from the state of Nevada. Prior to my recent divorce I even obtained a CDL and drove a tractor trailer for a year. Lastly, my doctoral degree will be issued to me as soon as I finish dissertation and pay off my last semester's tuition. With all of the education that I have, you would think that I could get a job that does not include baby siting someone else's children or driving a truck. Between 1980 and 1982 I was an instructor at the United States Military Academy at West Point New York and between 1988 and 1992 I instructed Military Science at the University of California at Berkeley. Because I spent so much time pursuing higher education, I became very familiar with computers and other electronics therefore, I really would like to obtain a position wherein I can use my knowledge and extensive experience to make addition money to pay off my student loans and improve my life during my declining years. I admit that I am 71 years old but I am totally physically fit and my mental capacity is beyond reproach. Can someone please help me?

I understand what you are talking about NCO Simmons . I am sargent LIndsay of the Army. I also have 2 associates degrees and a Batchelor degree in criminal justice . I am 50 yrs old. I been unemployed since i got back form deployment in 2012 and the army gave me a medical honerable sischarge in the national guard in 2015 . I got my BA degree from LIndenwood in may 2018 the VA gives me 60 percent disability of 1100 a minth and i use this to pay my rent and truck payment for a family of 3 in the house hold . But to make a long story short . The best i can get is a security work for Boeing and this dont start untill next month . Keep you head up NCO Simmons and die or die tieing to keep them values that the millitary installed in use . This is what seperated us from the one that just said they did and never followed through . It will take me about 2 to 3 months to get caught up on my bills ,but when the income flows in , it will releave lots of the stress. God bless you and you sound like a true teacher that i would be proud to have as my instuctor. As my unit would say we dont quite we fight till the end and then still keep going .

Try being a professor at a university. With all that knowledge that u have , im sure u can teach somebody something. And the pay is excellent.

I'm 61 and stuck in security guard hell .This month will be 4 years at. This awful part time job. I don't have , the biggest week ive had in over 1 year. Less than 8months until I reach 62 And will filee for social security retirement benefit. Yiuare wasting your time. advanced degrees just AA Business Admin. I went on 48 interviews about half in my previous field of over 20years aerospace & commercial metals. Many told me I was overqualified ur most went silent which seems to now be acceptable. Security guard was the only job offered to me from the 48 interviews over about 18 months. Many weeks I get no work shifts and other times I get 4, 5 or 6 hours in 1 week. It's mind boggling. This past week I worked 34.25 hours

Christopher, There are more of us out there than you know that are over-qualified and in debt; and most of us - myself included - are over the age of 55 and seeking gainful employment that pays better than minimum wage. While employers cannot legally out-right say 'you're too old,' they get around that by responding with insipid remarks like, 'In spite of your impressive resume and superior qualifications, we've decided to go with another candidate.' What does someone older do? They attempt to find a long-term contract position; but be wary as most of those either don't offer any kind of benefits or the ones that do if for no other reason than your age, prevents you from taking advantage of them as it ends up being less costly in the long run to get medical/dental insurance via your state's Health Exchange. Society doesn't help either since it's been perpetuated that once you reach a certain age you are no longer capable of providing value add in the workplace; and the attitude of Millennials doesn't help.

Have you considered finding an instructor position for one of the online universities? I believe you do not need a doctorate, only a Masters and they take into consideration your military and civilian experience. Best of luck to you.

Hi Christopher, your story is all too familiar with me more so bcuz I'm in the financial world. I found when the comfort level feels right, I let them know of certain hardship(s), my CR has taking a severe hit that I can working on; however, i do have a letter of explanation available if necessary. .. It sucks that some establishments dont waiver from "their policies"... But theres hope, most places, sincere & unshallow, will see the good in you & your commitment to higher education vs what's on those reports.
