Can someone shed light on why no one wants people over 55?
Like so many posting, I have been out of work for over one year. I would love some real answers why? I live in NH with an under 3% unemployment rate. I hear that high tech jobs are going unfilled because of the lack of qualified people. Yet I along with many other over 55 with years of experience, knowledge and other great attributes that boomers have over Gen X, and millennials. I have had great interview with great companies, and higher Ed institutions in the Boston Ma area. I have been told over and over. There is not any reason why we wouldn't hire you, its a matter of finding the right person, the right fit for our culture (code name, looking for someone younger!) Why? I just don't get it? I feel like I have some type of disease, Stay away! Can someone please shed some light as to what is really going on? when I was younger I worked with people in their late 50's and 60's who mentored and shared their knowledge, my 36 years of technical, and managerial experience has no value? FYI I am a life long leaner and since I have been out of work I have been studying ITIL and project management online. I have recently completed Network + and Cisco CCNA training.. I am also interning for a friends local computer store, and doing a lot of tech work on Cisco Networks, MS server, and VMware. So no one can say I am old and staying stagnant yet no one sees value in my background and experience. What frustrates me the most is the missed value that me and other older people bring to the table with life experience . Older people have raised children, financed children through college, , dealt with having $5 to our name until next pay check, and other hardships that I don't care to talk about! bottom line we are survivors, we have dealt with compromising, negotiating, resourceful, and comfortable with change. We grew up without internet, cell phones and most of us had B&W TV's. Yet I along with many other over 55, I am being told I offer no value to employers?

You are correct! 50 is the new 65 in the HR world. 32-year-old managers and recruiters are intimidated by our experience and credentials. Also I believe it's due to the cost of insurance premiums . I took a job temporarily in retail & the store I work at is full of 50+ former professionals working retail wages and hours. Pathetic & REAL!

I think they can pay someone younger less money. If you are not working I would try to find something even if it is not in your field showing that you want to work and need to grow within company.

I think part of it is they're worried older people are going to expect a higher salary than they can pay. Not fair, but I can kinda see where they're coming from in this economy.
I too have repeatedly experienced massive age descrimination! Its certainly not faor and its illegal and hard to prove! The botyom line is health care and insurance costs , amd I believeasskve greed on a grand scale! I have multiple college degrees and they male no difference! I am now driving an 18 wheeler! Something clearly needs to be done about this because any type of discrimination is wrong and should not be tolerated!
