Frustrated and Discouraged

I have applied to over 300 companies for nearly a year now and I've only gotten just a handful of bites. And after the few interviews I did receive the only explanation I was given was an email the next day saying although my resume and experience we're very impressive, they decided to move forward with another candidate. I have one Bachelor's degree in Psychology, another Bachelor's degree in Journalism with Mass Communications and a Creative Writing Diploma and I am still unable to find gainful employment. I feel as if all of my education is just a huge waste of time, effort and money, because none of them are doing me any good. I had even contemplated continuing my education to attain either my Master's and/or Doctorate in Psychology, however that would mean 4 yo 6 more years of college, which I already have 6 years under my belt. Also 2 years of internship upon graduation. Not to mention I will be in debt in excess of $100,000 or more in student loans after completion. None of the companies I've applied for that are in the areas of my degrees want to hire me because I don't have enough experience, and the entry-level companies don't want to hire me because I have too much education. So basically I"ve falling into a crack and can't get out. In the meantime my bills are piling up and I'm struggling to pay them. I've attended webinars, revised my resume several times, taken online tutoring classes for more experience, and I've read everything I possibly can on acing the interview to no avail. I just don't know what to do. I feel as if I'm drowning and can't be saved.

Always keep trying with a Smile

Life has a way of making you feel you are failing. The feeling of discouragement can be over whelming. I can not give you any job info but I can say this. There is always a rainbow at the end of the storm. No matter if it takes long to show up but it always does. It may take a bit to get to the rainbow dear, but this is the time to put up your strength. You can do this.

I'm in the same boat so I feel your pain and totally understand what your feeling. I have been unemployed for over a year, applied to lots of jobs, told I had impressive credentials but no job offers. Sucks because you know you're a good person but employers reject you. You feel beaten down and applying for jobs seem pointless. Seems like you're doing all the work with only another rejection at the end. Unless we give up I guess we keep plugging away, at least that's what I do just not as frequently as I used to. Pretty discouraged but I have to believe there's something for me.

I don’t know what area of psychology you are in, or what is your specialty, and what positions you have applied for in companies. So it is hard to gauge what one can offer as an advisory action. However, it is obvious that many are feeling like there is age discrimination. From my experience being in the past as a talent acquisition manager, it does matter when one sees a resume with so much education on paper, but lacks experience. Maybe that really is the reason. If one resorts to just blaming it on age discrimination, then we will view our world as hostile and it only makes one tend to be defensive, negative, and hopeless. However if we look at it in a different perspective, and see it as a learning opportunity, then we can make steps to realize maybe one does not need more education. Maybe the experience is necessary and if companies are not too keen on hiring someone with so much education for an entry level position, then it would really be wise to reinvent your career move. I’m not saying change your career path, but rather change your route. Maybe you can start to market yourself as someone who can write about employment issues, or employee relations, or anything that you see people are dealing with. Just make sure to back up claims and do a lot of citations. Then offer suggestions for solutions. You can start blogging about things you’re passionate about. You can be a technical writer. You can be a lifestyle journalist at your local newspaper (which mostly are online now). Or you can even be an assistant thesis writer for research professors. From there you can build your portfolio, resume, or clientele. At first you won’t be able to support yourself financially, thus you have to have a temporary job that would pay the bill. However as you do a good job and build your rapport and clientele, or experience, your income should start growing and you can slowly wean yourself from your temporary job that used to pay the bill. Best of luck, I hope you find your niche, and don’t give up. Also, prayer is powerful.

So many college degrees sound good but you have to get pretty creative to find a job that really uses them.

So try looking at different fields. Something that needs a degree but not a specific one. You can also look for jobs that might not need as much education. You don't have to put all of them on your resume.

Also check out usajobs.gov that is the listing for federal openings. Your psychology degree might be of benefit there.
