I'm feeling very desperate right now as no one has responded to any of my applications, save one, and the response was that I was not going to be asked to an interview, but the application is being kept on file. I'll have an Associate of Arts degree in music by the end of May, and I have a lot of experience in customer service. I've worked in restaurants, retail, a gas station, and a warehouse as a receiving coordinator. I love to learn new skills and am really looking for a more labor-intensive position than the office job I left in January. However, I can do anything that I'm trained to do, and I am willing to learn anything. I'm also willing to relocate after graduation. ALL suggestions are appreciated, especially for apprenticeships. Please and thank you!
Hi Kyrstin,
The application process can definitely be frustrating. But it sounds like you've had some very good and useful experience. Here are a few things I would recommend for you:
First, take a moment to breathe. I know this can be scary, but there are many people going through the job seeking process with you. Feel free to ask questions and collaborate. You may find people who can help where you least expect it. Ask people who know you for referrals.
Complete your profile on Jobcase. The more the community knows about your experience and interests, the better we can help. Also, it's a great place for employers to find out about you.
If you are getting your Assoc in the Arts, I would suggest creating an online music portfolio of your best pieces. A portfolio is key to getting arts-based work. Don't just throw everything in there. Use only the work that best represents your talents. Getting opinions from people you know could help. There are several places to create an online portfolio for free. If you already have one, post the URL in your Jobcase profile. If you have videos on YouTube or audio files on SoundCloud - include those URLs too.
There are other musicians (including myself) on Jobcase as well. Check out the Groups. You might reach out to them for suggestions.
Do some pro-bono work. Nothing creates opportunity better than offering to help organizations in need. They will appreciate it, and you can play an event and showcase your talents! And ... they might just introduce you to people who are looking to hire someone like you.
Best of luck, and let us know how it's going.
Cheers, Matthew
