What changes can I make?

I've been working as a Hyperion Admin/developer for the last 10 year and now due to a reorg I'm starting a job search. My position had been heavy on admin duties and light on development tasks. Unfortunately, in today's market most potential employers want a hybrid employee with most of the experience in development.

Any suggestions on how I can better market myself to get more interest from potential employers?

Thanks all for any suggestions and recommendations.

Hi Mark, Good for you! Take charge of your destiny. As you mentioned before, companies look for the Hybrid employee, and employ terms like career banding and reorganization instead of the term downsizing to build their bottom line. Just as the position of Admin/Developer exist, so does Development/Manager by which there are managers that are heavy on development and lightly manage. Find a good MENTOR to get you the management skill set that you need. Take courses to get certifications that are relevant to where you want to go while you are looking, look at that as an option. See if your current company has a continuing education incentive program. “Grow as you go is the new black.”

Hi Mark,

Take some free online courses (ALLISON, COURSERA, The Great Courses Plus) and do some more developing on your own. This will show your initiative and that you are keeping your skills current while learning new ones. Highlight what you can do for these employers concerning your current skills and how what you have learned fits into their scheme (your newly developed talents). The best to you - I am sure you will do very well.

A professional made resume or a resume builder maybe a LinkedIn profile be honest and be you. If you're a quick learner or can watch and learn and pick up on things quickly state that on your application resume or while your being interviewed . You gotta like Marilyn Monroe did when she studied the character she was portraying on film capture the essence or like Eminem said in a song you better loose yourself in the music the moment if you want it you better never let go you only get one shot do not miss your chance to blow opportunity comes once in a lifetime. Just be honest and be yourself but gotta do what my good friend does when she walks in a room all eyes straight on her.

Hi Mark: Look over your current skills and experience objectively and break them down into more generic terms. Also, expand your search into other types of business (e.g. law firms, government agencies (federal, state, county, local), legal corporations, hospitals, higher education institutions like universities, tech colleges, junior colleges, etc.). If you've done more admin than developer tasks, expand your search criteria (e.g.: administrator, secretary, etc.). In addition, look at your current training and the type of software you've been using. Are you up to date on the latest software and databases used? When was your last typing test? (some employers want 40-50 wpm and 5500+ keystrokes for data entry). If it's been a while since your last college course or tech course, it may be an idea to take on additional vocational training or a college course to get your knowledge and skills refreshed. I'm not trying to be critical here, but when you've been at a particular position for an extended amount of time, you want to show a potential employer that your training and skills are in-sync with what they need. If they need some form of hybrid employee with overlapping skills, see what you need to do to become one. Hope this helps!

Market yourself as a development enabler. You should work on reducing tech debt with automation and working to enable development to increase velocity. Employers know you cannot get rid of admins but they do want you to add value to the business as well.
