Inside Sales Representative at Comcast

Need new options

I was at my job for 17 years now they laid off the entire office to move out of state. I don't want to do the same position anymore. Does anyone have any advice on how to explain that during an interview? I want to show that I am able to do more than just sales I hated the whole commission end of it, I just want a stable pay for my hard work.

Your biggest challenge initially is going to be trying to convince employers on paper that you have the proper hard and soft skills needed to qualify for the job(s) you’re seeking to get into. Do you have a specific career or job in mind? Knowing where you want to go makes planning for the trip a whole lot easier.

Make a list of all the skills you’ve mastered during your 17 years as a Sales professional (Exceptional verbal and written communication, problem-solver, product knowledge, planning and overachieving goals, etc.). These are your strengths.

Then look at the job descriptions for new employment opportunities you’d like to enter. Carefully review the positions responsibilities but pay close attention to at the qualifications and preferred requirements sections. Identify all the transferrable skills you can carry over from your Sales experience and make a list of any special skill, certifications, and/or training you will need in order to meet the basic requirements to apply.

Craft a new resume using a combination of new skills/training and transferrable skills (strengths) to make you rank high and stand out as a potential candidate on paper or during the application process.

Once you land an interview then yes, definitely prepare to overcome that “why the change in career” question with a brief but convincing argument as to why you’re passionate and excited about entering the new industry. Remember, a job interview is a Sale so make sure you leave any unnecessary baggage at home and keep the conversation positive on your end at all times.
