First would be to call a day or two after you submit your application to make sure it was received and if there might be anything else they need. Then if you haven't heard anything, call again a week later to check on your standing or to set up a time to meet with the manager yourself. Once you have had your interview, a thank you card or email is always a great idea. You can also do a follow up after the interview to see if you are being considered for the position.
