Questions for those of you who work HR departments
I'm curious as to a few things that some employers do and as to why these are done this way. #1. Why do a majority of employers not give a statement of a base rate of pay for positions? I have applied for positions which come to find out pay $8.00 an hour or so and may be just 30 to 35 hours a week. I don't know why the base pay rate is so hush-hush. #2. Why is it on applications the question is asked whether or not you can do a job with or without accommodations? Isn't this really kind of a potentially illegal question under ADA because if I say yes I can with an accommodation then you know I have a disability and can potentially discriminate. #3. Why do employers need in the application process my social security number????? This makes me extremely uncomfortable to put my SS number on an application system when in all honesty if 50 people apply for the position and there is only one, then guess what 49 SS numbers are out there for someone to potentially steal.
Anyway, would love to hear some real HR people's answers to these to help me understand.

Hi Kenneth, I've been in Recruiting for the past 7+ years and I will try and give some helpful information.
#1 - A lot of companies are open to people with different experience levels and they have the ability to pay less or more based on that experience. They may not want to make people think it's more entry level or senior by putting a pay rate in the job posting.
#2 - I'm not sure on this one because I have no experience on the HR/Legal side of things. If the job consists of a lot of physical labor, they may need to know but I'm not sure about the legal side of things.
#3 - I haven't seen this too often. I know once you are in a position where a background check needs to be done, that would make sense but I'm not sure why they would need that information before that. Typically that step wouldn't take place unless they were planning on hiring you as well.
I hope this helps but again it's just my opinion and hopefully others can help out as well!
