I think I messed up!

I called Walmart yesterday to ask about my application. The employee that answered transferred me to a manager who asked me when I applied which was recent then looked up my info. She asked me about available work hours and if I had any retail experience. I told her I can work evenings right now but I would be open to any shifts at the end of the semester. Here’s where I think I completely messes up. I told her that I didn’t have any retail experience but that I was a fast learner and felt confident that I could do the job. She told me she’ll review my application and contact me in a week or so for an interview. It’s the truth, I never worked retail before but i should have made a more convincing argument that I can do the job. Do you think I’ll get a call back? Is there anything I can now to improve my chances? Location wise this would be an idea job for me because I don’t have car right now. I appreciate anything advice you guys can share with me.

NEVER WAIT FOR THEM TO CALL YOU!! You should always call them back a day or two later and ask about the job because it's likely they won't call you back. You have to call them first, mention your application, and then you'll have a better chance at getting an interview and the job.

Hope this helps~

Use your phone time as a launching pad. You now have a warm relationship... If you had the presence of mind to jot down her name. Send her a thank you note thanking her for her willingness to take the time with you on (whatever day you spoke). Emphasize your geographic desirablity in that there are no weather or traffic conditions that would prevent your consistent attendance and that you are willing to take on any role they need, just to get your foot in the door.

You may be able to locate her email address somewhere, but a handwritten, stamped, mailed correspondence shows effort and style... and is a tangible method of connection that is rarely honored in this instant gratification age. Maura

I don't think you messed up... I have learned that no matter what your experience is, employers can figure out a way not to hire you due to age, race, religion, or whatever and cover it up so nicely. They can even blackball you from an industry forever.

They will tell you don't have enough education, you get the education, now you have too much. Your experience in not enough, then it becomes too much, or your skill set is off. They ALL find excuses.

I have been looking for something part time, even a auto parts store where you deliver parts.... I lived 6 blocks away.. NOPE! I was even willing to do it for their salary.. NOPE!

Just keep plugging away and while you are at it, if there is something you can do on your own to make money you might do better at. I have lost a lot of hope in employers these days!

No you didn't mess up, you were honest. I worked for Walmart for many years. Your application will come up in their system when there is a job opening for the position you applied for. Tip Apply for every position you'd be willing to do. You can go back on the computer and add positions to your application. There is no benefit to resumes and "professional dress" for Walmart unless you are going for a management position. .....Clean and Neat is what is called for. I didn't get a call for over a month when I was hired. There will be 3 interviews. Also, it does help if you know someone working there that will bring your name up....not required but it does help if the person is a good worker they will think that you will be too (birds of a feather thinking). Everyone goes through training regardless of their experience, so don't stress about no retail experience. If you get hired, remember there will be good days and bad but In all honesty nothing there is different than is common in all retail jobs. The company gets bashed but after 14 years in retail (most of it in management) I can say they are all about the same. You have to find what works for you - hours, benefits, location, etc. ...weigh the big picture. Company A may pay more but after the transportation cost, it works out the same as the lower paying Company B that you could walk to. All things are relative to your needs.

Cashier Stocker at Wal Mart Stores Inc

My first message may have accidentally erased. It's not so hard to get a job at Walmart. I am a cashier there. I do not agree that they do not give raises. I always got a raise every evaluation I was given. So I believe if you do not call in too often, and you work, in other words, look busy even if you don't have a customer at the moment, then you will get a raise. I'm a good worker, I don't play around when I'm not on break. That's the basic thing they look for. As a side note, they have good health insurance, and other benefits. I hope this helps. And also, you may like how they run things at the neighborhood market better. I've heard good things about Walmart neighborhood market. I've only worked at supercenters. Best wishes to you! Lori

First, go here on the Internet: http://r.search.yahoo.com/_ylt=AwrBT.BKo0RXMi8AzO9XNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTEyaGg0MHNrBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMzBHZ0aWQDQjIxNTNfMQRzZWMDc3I-/RV=2/RE=1464144843/RO=10/RU=http%3a%2f%2fthe-whitelight.com%2fmanual%2fdownload%2fwalmart-employee-training-manual.pdf/RK=0/RS=X.dAqxFxIIKN4C.DS9XRRBteRNA- Download the PDF for the Walmart training that addresses the position for which you've applied. Read it. Go back to the store and asked to speak to the manager you spoke with before, and tell her/him that after reading the manual (that you made the effort to read), you feel confident you can do the job.
